Got a new anode for the heat exchanger for my VP engine & outdrive.

It's NPT so normally Teflon tape to make sure no leaks but I don't think you want to have any insulation between the threaded female NPT opening and the anode. But maybe once installed, the threads cut up the Teflon tape and make a solid electrical connection.

Old anode (unknown time in use) was totally shot and looks like it was installed with Teflon tape.

Others with closed cooling must have been through this.
 
Yes. Threads cut through the tape, your worn anode proves it. Check with a continuity tester if concerned.
