"Draw the line", that's a tough question and you'll never satisfy 100% of the folks. First, thanks for being moderator, without volunteers, this board wouldn't work.
Now, for my not so humble opinion...we deal with this silly crap at the boat club all the time. Just recently, you would have thought the rear commodore was trying to steal everyone's first born when he suggested day sailors can be up to 25' instead of the previous 19'. He just bought a family cruiser and wanted to keep his toy 24' cigarette boat in the yard for occasional use. Me, I said sure, who frigging cares, he's a member, if it makes him happy, and doesn't harm me, inconvenience me or cost the club money....who cares. Well apparently plenty of people....frustrating, very very frustrating. End result: We have a frigging rule for EVERYTHING. Such as 35' LOA limit, 19' trailer limit, 35hrs work season, who can rent the club, when is it considered a rental, work party start times, etc, etc, etc.
See, it's much easier for leadership to rule with a heavy hand.
With that in mind, I'd let most thinks fly in here. If fellow ROs want to plug their businesses, go for it. I don't know Randy, I see he doesn't participate here much but I also see he's well known around PBM. He's just using this board to communicate with fellow boaters who happen to be fans as well....that works for me. Just like we use this board about boat shows or to meet up at breakfast or the NYC poker run. If an RO has a B&B on the river, I'd be curious as well. If George wants to promote his boat detailing business, that works too. For the record, I would have let Pete's post fly as well. It's not to often you'd hear from a salesman/dealer that he'd let a boat go for trade-in value (as confirmed by Pete's boss Charlie). Sorry, but I think that's big news that could significantly benefit a fellow RO. Besides, Pete doesn't otherwise promote product....at least not that I could recall.
I believe Les' contention has always been that we must be familiar with the product and not some third party yoyo spamming here. Also, ads should not compete with Boatfix. I'd like to add one more caveat. The RO posting must have a track record or have a reputation that is otherwise sponsored by another RO.
Word of mouth for business is huge....we're like a group hanging at the dock or more appropriately, at the bar.
Good luck Mike...
