I've seen this before but was repeated today.

What would happen if a class 3 hurricane (like the one that hit in '38) hits NYC and LI today.

They showed simulations with a 28' storm serge and the effect on NYC and LI.

Not pretty, especially when they use terms like "not if, but when". The 're using a formula that has us on a 100 year cycle for direct hits and there is documentation of a major hurricane that hit in the 1800's, again in 1938 and say we are due again soon.

I'm just going to go into my basement now and curl up into a ball.

They've been saying for years that we're due for a major one... I don't think anyone really knows. Eventually we'll get one, whether it's this year or 50 years from now. No sense getting too concerned.

Interestingly enough my house was here in 1938, and according to the neighbors the water never reached the house. It did reach the house during hurricane Gloria in 1985, but no real damage. I've read somewhere that the Great South Bay pretty much drained out during the 1938 storm because of the side of the storm it was on.
