This may be an ignorant question but is there any reason why I can not use a household reverse osmosis unit with U/V, add a high pressure pump and several pre filters, use lake water as the input and get drinking water as the output?
I agree with Vic, the economics of doing that seem to be a little out of justifiable; depends on what you are paying for city water. Make certain that you have the water tested on occasion for coliform bacteria and that you have sufficient capacity for your houshold peak flowrate demands.
