How to tell if a water maker is working?

I am attempting to return a Village Marine SPW 400 water maker to service after 5 years of storage. I think it was properly pickled when last used but don't know for sure. The water lines are coated with junk inside and it has gone very skunky. I flushed it several times with distilled water then cycled the cleaning chemicals in distilled water several times. It is beginning to clean up and if I find it is working I plan to replace all the hoses but for nowI don't know how to be certain that the product water is OK. How do you tell??
