Hey guys, the admiral and I are planning a trip to the Hudson valley for just a couple of days. This will be by car and we plan on staying somewhere no further north than Albany.
We're from VA - never been there and really don't know much about the area. We just want to get away for a few days and see a different part of the country.
What are some must see places we should plan to visit?
Where are there some good sightseeing river cruises?
Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks

Wow, that's a tall order. If you are looking for different NYC will offer you everything. Museums, and many other attractions abound. The trick is to find the not so popular ones. The statue and empire state building can have killer lines.

Off beat places like the Rhinebeck Aerodrome might be fun and there are a few good restaurants in Rhinebeck. There are several mansions in that area including Valeur, Olana, Roosevelt, Vanderbilt. One can make a day of driving along the East shore of the Hudson reviewing these. Here is a link with some ideas. I believe there are more out there if you google around you may find more open to the public. http://www.hudsonriver.com/node/49

West Point is closed. I believe you can get in if you make arrangements. You will NOT get in without them. Call ahead and make plans with a tour or whatever else it takes. http://www.usma.edu/visiting.asp I would recommend stopping in here. I never got enough of the place. Getting in there for a football game is always a bonus.

As far as river cruises go, I can't recommend much since upstate it's very quiet. There are a couple of lighthouses open. Saugerties is only open on Sundays for tours. The Kingston light is open and kind of musty. Needs help and it's slow in getting it.

Boatbum,
Thanks for the comments. Have no plans to go to NYC, been there, done that. Never been up the valley and looking for the more rural atmospere the valley has to offer.

Good to know about West Point being closed, Would like to drive thru just to see the place - not looking for a tour.

Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

If you're heading towards West Point, visit the Thayer Hotel which is on the grounds. It is very historic and they have a Friday night seafood buffet that is spectacular, with a great view of the river.

When you drive up to the gates tell them where you are going, and they will direct you from there.

That's right, and they used to do brunch on Sunday's that was good.

Isn't Chelsea Clinton's wedding this weekend? She's getting married in Rhinebeck so you should stay clear, it will be a zoo. New Paltz and Woodstock?

We won't be there for another 10-12 days.

is the father of the bride passing out cigars?

Not going there!

By the way, if you are out the New Paltz way there is the Mohonk Mountain house. Not the best food but we had a brunch there once that was just about ok. Also consider a hike at Lake Miniwaska. Both are quite scenic for hiking. http://www.localhikes.com/Hikes/overlook_0000.asp is another.

Lunch at the Newburgh water front on a clear day is wonderful, but stay away from town. In other words, lunch is about all I would recommend there and there are several good places with great outide dining at the river's edge. Consider driving up Storm King Mountain road (Route 218).
