I wasn't going to tell anyone but...

How many hours did it take him to weld that? I'm thinking welders are getting a pretty good hourly rate these days ?

Total time actually welding he spent about two-three hours. Prep (removing the manifold, batteries, and waste tank, and preping the area for welding) and getting in and out of there about 20 times it took about 10 hours.

If I didn't know him I would have probably just used JB weld by its self. With some really good prep work and an aluminum plate larger than the hole I think the JB weld would have held just fine.

Hi Mike,

I assume that block is cast iron then?? Or is that a cast aluminum block?? Either way, I think it takes an experienced welder to work on either... Some of these prop repair folks are pretty good..

I had a SS stud re-welded on the bow rail.. he was able to do it with the rail in place on the boat.. and it took only a few minutes. Total charge was only about $20 and he did it on a saturday afternoon at the dock. I think I gave him double for his time and effort to come out and setup. He did a nice job with it.

Cast iron block. He used some sort of nickel-based welding rod. I've seen some of the stainless steel rail work this guy does and it is amazing. He does the welds and then grinds, sands, and buffs them out until the pieces look like they're one continuos piece. Pretty neat stuff. Yep-them prop guys are a talented folk...

If you're in the Sacramento area and need prop or welding work his shop is American River Propeller.

I will be a contrarian. Sorry, but I would not trust my life to a band aid repair job.

Me neither. I wouldn't have even considered a repair like this if I was going to use the boat to venture out into open blue water. We mostly spend our time on inland lakes and an occasional trip out on the Sacramento River. The way I look at it - If it blows up or sinks it's not a huge loss [8D]
