The news said it was like vegetal oil? That sounds like BS to me, and the have it all contained more BS friends said they could smell it in the water in Haverstraw I have no sense of smell so I couldn't tell.

Vegetable Oil isn't hazordous waste according to it's MSD.

Why clean it up if it's "like" food grade vegetable oil?
I find it hard to believe that a large power transformer of unknown age uses vegetable oil as a coolant.

The smell of oil was strong at SPBM today and I could see the oil on the water. I have a stain on my boat. Hope it washes off easily. This may knock out the fishing for a while. We'll see.

According to what I read, the "vegetable oil" is referring to the foam they used to put out the fire. Apparently it contains animal fat.

They are trying to say the oil slick *might be* from that...

I call BS

I have been there just about everyday and no I haven't seen anything. I have little sense of smell I may be imagining it but I thought I smelled something but I'm really not sure some other people claim they smelled something so maybe it's just a suggestive thought.

I'm hoping to be at the boat this afternoon into evening with Audrey she has a much better sense of smell I will let you know if so comments about it. I think it actually is under control and hopefully a none issue!

FWIW - Modern transformers (since 1999) use either a mineral oil or an optional vegetable oil as a dielectric and coolant. I would think either product would have inhibitors and additives to extend the life of the oil to the maximum. And a man-made foaming agent was used to extinguish the fire.

Hopefully, it's cleaned up by the weekend!
