I want to install a magma kettle grill to the back of my new boat. I am leaning towards attaching it to the top of the fiberglass hull on the aft corner, port side.
EDIT: Here is a boatfix link showing the item i was leaning towards, page 428 of the boatfix catalogue, bottom left corner item, "Deck Socket Mount Kit."
http://boatfix.com/catalog/428.pdf

My boat, a 3372 Cruisers Yachts, Inc. has a balsa core. What do i need to do to properly/safely install this mount? Can you just screw it into the fiberglass just like you would wood? Do i need to seal it? ANy tips?

Thanks!!

Radio has always had a problem with our link policy - last time we had this discussion, a couple weeks ago, he made his opinion known at that time as well. However, as Mike states, the policy came about as a result of a vote, not an arbitrary decision on my part. Radio can't seem to grasp that.

As far as searching on the BoatFix site is concerned, we have a detailed index for parts and accessories, a search page and a bunch of catagories. We also have a help desk in case anyone is having a problem finding anything. The major problem is that parts, electronics, fishing, cmap, navionics and weems and plath stuff is all in different databases. We are working to consolidate all that. I do appreciate the suggestions.

Wood, don't worry about it - this happens every couple of months. Although I am a tad upset about Radio's comment about getting something "tangible" for his $20. The subscribtion fee is voluntary and is "advertised" as a fee to help offset the cost of operating this forum for the benefit of everyone. We use, for example, over 100 gigabytes of bandwidth each month. I'll be more than happy to refund Radio his donation if he feels that he isn't getting his $1.67 per month benefit from it.

Radio, I've got no problem with constructive criticism. However, we had this links discussion just 10 days ago. I explained that the links policy was a result of an RO's vote. Your response was, "C'mon Les.....let's be honest here. Reputation of a site is not why you banned them, you don't want people advertising for other companies when the items can be bought from you!"

In other words, you called me a liar.

At that point, several other ROs came along, ones who participated in the vote and recalled the results. You ignored those comments and said, "I just thought that Les should be honest with the real reason commercial links are not allowed."

I said this then and I'll say it again now. The "real" reason why commercial links are not allowed is a result of a vote of the ROs - just like every major board policy. I do not make arbitrary rules here. The participants control the content and the policies. We have even voted on Avatars. Yes, I do get a little upset when, after six years of trying to build a decent place for boaters to get honest and sound boating advice, of trying to build a community where boaters can get help and make a new friend or two, of doing it for free for four of those six years and then holding another vote to see if a subscription fee would be acceptable, I get accused of lying. The subscription fee puts not penny one in my pocket. It all goes to fund site expenses.

That said, I do appreciate your business, Jason. It would seem, however, that something else might be bothering you. As noted above, we had this link discussion 10 days ago. You concluded with, "I am proud to be part of this community, and am thankful for what Les, George and anyone else that has worked to build this site into what it is today have done for all of us. I simply stated that it should be made clear why those links are not allowed, and Les has done that. So, end of issue."

You then comment on this thread, after a post by Pete, "perhaps it would be better for you to ask these questions directly to myself or Dan, that way you can avoid any ridicule that may be slung your way by the Boatfix police here."

That is an insult to all the experienced boaters here who contribute their time and expertise on a daily basis - as if you and Dan are the sole source of knowledge here and the only ones who will supply unbiased information.

I don't ever recall anyone being "ridculed" for posting a link with the possible exception of some one-shot wonders. They are usually handled with a small edit of the post with an email to the poster explaining the policy. While I am not a big fan of West's business tactics, especially after they specially mentioned BoatFix as a target, they are not singled out. The "no commercial links policy," clearly stated in big bold letters in the registration agreement here, is applied as fairly as I can. There is no problem with links to manufacturer's sites, to non-profit sites and to other informational sites. But we do have numbers of people blowing in here, dropping their advertising, much of it bogus, and leaving. Folks here got tired of it and the policy was a result of the majority opinion. You seem to have a real problem accepting the results of that vote. This thread would not have deteriorated into what it is if you had just accepted Pete's comment that wasn't even directed at you.

Wood made an honest "error" by referencing a photo by linking to the WM site. Pete attempted to correct the problem. You come along and, despite your comments of 10 days ago, jump in with full-blown negativity, again accusing me of lying to the folks here. That despite the posts of ROs who voted. However, I'm sort of glad you did. While there's not much I can do about the search function here, I will place a higher priority on consolidating the databases on BoatFix to improve the search function there.

twisted and nay, we just got the new 2006 catalogs in and will be updating the PDFs, the index and the database this weekend. Hold off a couple of days and then you should be able to see the new catalog ordering link right on the home page at BoatFix.com.

Well, I can see that we are not going to let facts interfere with our discussion here. First of all, not that it matters, but your order levels are significantly lower than stated. Secondly, you may have been a member here for four years but a subscriber for less than one. Next, there are no legions of ROs waiting to pounce on anyone. I would hardly call Pete's post a "pounce." Calling ROs "kindergardeners" is way over the line, Jason. And speaking of being well over the line, your misquote of mine certainly fits that criteria. Kindly point me to that topic. The only topic I could find where Chris Kelly was mentioned was this one:

http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=65421

containing two links from you, undeleted, to other sites.

Possibly this is the topic to which you refer:

http://www.boatered.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=59983

I said, after a number of ROs stated Boattest complaints, that:

"They are a magazine for all intents and purposes. They get paid to publish that data. They don't perform a test unless the manufacturer pays for it."

That is a far cry from "talking trash." Also, for the record, Bennett and Raritan are not commercial sponsors. They pay nothing. Vic from Raritan dedicates some of his own free time here hosting the marine sanitation forum and Tom from Bennett pops in every once in a while.

Jason, you are losing all credibilty with me and probably with your fellow ROs. If you want to argue links, then do so. But avoid the name calling and the misquotes. I appreciate your radio knowledge and I'm sure a number of people here have benefited from it. But this type of behavior helps no one. As far as BoatFix questions are concerned, I've said this a few dozen times and I'll say it again. BoatFix questions should be directed to the help desk at BoatFix. While I will provide a link to a product on BoatFix for clarification purposes, I will not allow BoaterEd to become the help desk for BoatFix. That is not what BoaterEd is all about.

Thanks for the update. I found that email. Here's what I said, verbatim:

"I’ve known Chris Kelly for years and he doesn’t do anything unless he gets paid for it. Each test report for boats and equipment is paid for by the manufacturer. They are not a good source for “objective” information – in my humble opinion."

I wrote that after you apologized for posting the link, trying to explain why I objected to it.

That is the same thing I said in the post and a far cry from what you quoted me as saying, "I know Chris Kelly. He only cares about lining his pockets. With him it's all about who can pay him more money." It is also the same thing that the other ROs said in the topic I referenced.

Obviously, I have no problem showing folks how "greedy" I am. That was clear when it took the ROs here two years to get me to even consider the subscription issue. I will also process your prorated refund. Just do me a favor and try to be a tad more accurate in future posts concerning my statements and motives. We will miss your radio related technical help though.

Thanks, George, but that's not necessary. Despite the difficulty my greedy self has with parting with funds, I'll give him his refund - prorated. Since he was due to expire next month, that comes to about $1.80. While I could have lived without the personal attacks and the misquotes, the topic, as a whole, is a good one. I know the search function here sucks. But I can't do much about that without updating the software. I can't do that until late summer. Luckily no one mentioned the photo albums because there's a problem there too. However, I've wracked my brain trying to find better ways to search for stuff on BoatFix. We have about 80,000 parts on the site in three primary databases and four subdatabases along with 1,200 pages on the site. We've added a number of ways to find parts, such as application guides that allow folks to enter year and horsepower of their engine for part selection. We have a detailed index page similar to what you find in the back of the catalog. But I can easily understand where people would have difficulty.

The customer service issue and response is, as you well know, one of cost. There is a constant battle between trying to keep prices low and customer service levels high. Our customer service manager does a great job responding to backorder requests and order status updates. George and I sometimes fall behind on new part quotes: "I have a 1954 Whizbanger 10 HP and need a new decal for it" or "my loran unit has a couple of tubes that need replacing." Stuff like that. I'm worse than George. But I'm also easier to get on the phone. Emails don't work just because of the sheer volume of junk that we get.

I'm working on a master database that I hope will solve some of the searching problems. Of course, that's liable to create a new set of problems - but we'll worry about that when it happens. Anyway, thanks for the kind words.
