I'm looking at up grading my instrument panel this winter on my 87 EC. Does anyone know how to get the guages off? I thought the bezel ring would screw off but it doesn't seem to work and I don't want to break them.
 
many gages are held from the rear by a u shape bracket. have a look back there
 
I have taken mine off several times and replaced one or two guages and they do come out from the back. You should be able to find panel screws around the perimiter of the panel.

If I understand you correctly, I need to remove the panel first which will give access to the gauges?
 
yep and there will be bolts on the back of each guage (2) with nuts and washers.
