Eversince Petit alumaspray was pulled off the market (about 5-6 years ago) I have not found a sterndrive paint that works in the brackish Hudson. I have tried Interlux, the new reformulated Alumaspray and a third I can't think of, and every year I am scraping barnacles off my drive.

I scotchbrite, clean and use a can and a half of spray paint and still...

Does anything work?

Thanks

I fight barnacles all year. When the water temp rises above 70 degrees the growth rate increases at a remarkable pace. I gave up on the aerosol outdrive paints years ago and now will only paint with 4 coats applied with a brush, but the barnacles still win.

This year I have contracted with a diver. It is still impossible for a diver to scrape in all the tiny areas next to the transom. The only way to get of those areas is to drop the drives.

What paint do you use with a brush? I've only seen sterndrive paint in a spray...

I just painted on Interlux 33. First 2coats primacon and than 2 coats 33. Hope it works

The key to getting the stuff to stick is following the instructions on surface prep. I have used interlux primocon and trilux II antifouling with no problems. Stating from scraatch, sand with 80 grit paper, wipe with #216 thinner, prime with primoncon 2 coats, then 2 coat antifouling. most issues here with improper surface prep.

I do "OK" with the Interlux here. Usually have a few barnacles and some slime, but nothing that doesn't power wash off pretty easily. Last year I tried to save a few bucks and used the West Marine version, paint is paint, right? Wrong. Big mistake, what a mess. Never again.

There is a thread in the engines forum were people are getting good results with lanolin on the running gear.

I did the spray route last year and that was a mistake. The end of the season I was covered in barnacles. This year I did the sand, Prime, and hand paint with Trilux 33. I am hoping for better results.

Thanks,
MJK

I boat on Long Island with a single IO and never have I had barnacles. But then again I use the boat 3 times a week

whatever my mechanic does seems to work?

Trilux-33....whats a barnacle? I never see them on drive, they do grab inside prop hub.
