"Coroner identifies motorcyclist killed in Oakley crash

OAKLEY - The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office has identified a motorcyclist who died Sunday night in an Oakley accident after his Harley-Davidson struck a pickup truck, police said.

Jack Gilbert, 65, of Bethel Island, was found dead at the scene of the crash about 7:45 p.m. on East Cypress Road between Jersey Island and Bethel Island roads, Oakley police Chief Chris Thorsen said.

Officers closed down the roadway, diverting traffic from East Cypress Road down Jersey Island Road to Dutch Slough Road. Officers escorted cars along the one-lane levee road, causing significant traffic delays, Thorsen said. The road was expected to be reopened before midnight, the chief said.

Investigators are looking into what caused the motorcycle to strike the side of the pickup truck, Thorsen said. Gilbert was wearing a helmet, he said.

No one else was injured in the accident, Thorsen said."
 
Jack was a long time resident and "character" on Bethel Island. A drunk driver has been arrested in connection with this. Apparently he hit Jack head on and left the scene of the accident. May he rest in peace!

Sorry to hear - was he a friend of yours? I never drink and drive, and beat my friends up if they do. There is no excuse - the guy deserves to have the book thrown at him.

No, I don't want to speak badly of the deceased, but I tried to avoid him. But he had lived on Bethel Island for eons and was well known at the bars around the area and had probably been 86'd from each of them at one time or another.

I was on friendly terms with his wife and hear that she is taking this very hard. She is a nice lady who deserves better in her life. I am praying for her.

We lost our Jack on Sunday, June 1, 2008 coming home from a run. Jack was almost home when his life was cut short by a drunk driver who cut across his path. Jack was happiest when he was riding.
