Federal Navigation Channel Maintenance of
Infrastructure and Stewardship
FACT SHEET DECEMBER 2007/JANUARY 2008
DESCRIPTION: The periodic maintenance dredging of Jones Inlet federal navigation channel and deposition
basins with placement on the beach at Point Lookout, Hempstead, New York, contingent on available
federal/non-federal funding in FY2008.
AUTHORIZATION: The federal navigation project for Jones Inlet, NY was authorized by the Rivers and
Harbors Act of 1945, 77th Congress, 1st Session, Document No. 409.
COMMERCE: The 2006 commercial tonnage for Jones Inlet was approximately 10,000 tons. The five-year
average annual commercial tonnage at Jones Inlet is less than 2,500 tons, consisting mainly of fish and fish
products, boat related supplies, metal scraps and fuel oil.
FUNDING: The State of New York has provided $7.6M for the dredging and beach placement of the sand,
including environmental coordination, Plans and Specs, and developing the Contributed Funds Memorandum of
Agreement for the project. This CFMOA was fully executed on Nov 8, 2007. $100K federal funding is in the
President's budget request for FY08. In FY07, $68K was provided in the FY2007 Workplan. The funds were
used to update the project Plans and Specifications, conduct a deep water survey at the inlet, and coordinate
with the Town of Hempstead, the NYSDEC, and the US Coast Guard.
STATUS: Federal project funds are provided in FY08 for updated environmental coordination and a survey.
$7.6M funds from the State of NY have been received by the Corps and are expected to be accessible by
December 10, 2007. A deep water survey was performed in mid-January 2007, and a Specifications Survey in
October 2007, which were coordinated with the US Coast Guard for (re-)positioning of the buoys to mark
available deep water for transiting the inlet. There are more than 700,000 cubic yards of shoals in the federal
channel and deposition basin. A bid opening is scheduled for December 12, 2007 with subsequent December
award and Notice to Proceed. Project is expected to be dredged between Jan 15-Mar 31, 2008.
The project was last maintained in 1995/96 with the removal of approximately 459,000 CY of sand which was
beneficially reused as beach nourishment. The material was placed along the severely eroded areas of the Point
Lookout Beach.
