Kayakers in state boat channel

Has to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Its like the game frogger only with Kayakers.
For those unfamiliar its like trying to cross an over congested highway on foot. Well with a broken foot and crutches

Don't subscribe to that rag, so couldn't read the whole story, but this should be almost as much fun as dodging the occasional family I see anchored and swimming in the State Boat Channel.
It's going to be really fun for these Kayakers when some big floating condo glides by throwing a wake that extends across the bay, and resembles a typhoon wave.

I didnt know u had to log in ... Basically states gilgo and cedar beach will be launch areas and rentals for kayakers. Crazy .....

Awesome, new targets for my huge wake!
I have 1 rule, the channel is for my big boat and I only slow down for boats or people in distress.
If your fishing, anchored and not in distress, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, or skinny dipping in my channel I ain't slowing down for you!

....well if your skinny dipping, female and look decent, I may slow down!!

On a Sunday about 5 pm, it should be very interesting by Cedar. I would wait it out with my 35' Carver because it was so nuts. The idea had to of come from someone who has never been in the state channel on a weekend.

Its like encouraging 5 year olds to cross Broadway mid day without any regard to the traffic or pedestrian signals.

The boaters of course will be blamed when someone gets hurt.

I am still confused about the law and your responsibility for your wake.

They should say Kayaks are only allowed to cross the state channel in the 5 mph zones and they should have signs that say watch for kayaks crossing. They should cross and go into the flats. Though I have seen alot of guys zipping thru the flats in smaller boats and jetski's.

Kayaks and speedboats don't mix period!

Almost every year I lived on Long Island .... someone was killed on the GSB in a boating related accident.......THIS may up those odds.

Law makers on LI are just dumb humans.

I agree a "captain" of a rowboat in the state boat channel is putting himself in danger however by law you are responsible for damage made by your wake.
That would include coming into an anchorage area like Hemlock or Garbage Cove on plane.

I have never heard of it prosecuted, only in insurance claims. The no wake zone in the state channel is obvious, but what about the rest of the area where it is 14 mph. How would you enforce a wake rule if I can do 14 mph.

Walter sec. 45 of NYS Navigation law covers reckless operation, a misdemeanor under the law. If your large wake causes injury or property damage you are responsible under the law. This is the answer I received from NYS.
