I'm wondering if someone can give me an idea of how to remove a starter from a Kohler 6.5 CZ generator. While I've remove many auto starters I can't seem to see how this one is bolted to the motor. Of course, I have to be upside down and backwards to see the dang thing. I appreciate the help.

I just replaced the starter on a 1995 6.5 CZ23 acouple of weeks ago and it's still fresh in my mind. In summary, the starter bolts are located under the timing belt cover and thread into the starter through a bracket from the opposite side.
1) Disconnect cables at battery, close seacock, remove sound shield
2) remove water pump and hoses
3) Remove lower support bracket (the one that the raw water hose passes through)
4) Remove governor spring (above starter, below carb)
5) remove timing belt cover screws(10mm wrench) I think that there are 8 screws
6) remove timing belt cover
7) This will provide you with access to the two M8 starter bolts.
8) Disconnect battery cable and solenoid wire (push on) from starter.
9) remove mounting bolts and pull out starter.
10) Bandage wounds as required.

Good luck.

Thanks, I believe mine is a 95 as well so this is just what I needed. Now I just need to find the new starter. You wouldn't happen to have the part number. My boat is about 75 miles away and I won't be back until the weekend.

I'm not sure what the problem is with your starter, but I would try to have it rebuilt before purchasing a new unit. New from Kohler is $600+ and it has been replaced with a different model starter which may not fit without grinding the housing of the starter to make it fit.

Kohler P/N for existing starter = 267726 (Mitsuba)
New P/N = GM15295 (Nippondenso)

My local dealer gave me a price of $595. Man that's such a ripoff. I was looking up Kohler starters for some of there other motors and they run around $100. I'm going to look into the rebuild if I can find someone local. Thanks for the information

It is not Kohler that makes it so high priced the engine is a Honda other starters from Kohler for units that are built by kawaski, ford or g.m. are much less

I just had my starter rebuilt for $125.oo and its like brand new. He replaced all the springs and the bendix gear. Much better than 595.00, good luck.

The Parts Manual and Service Manual can be downloaded at http://www.marinegenerators.us/kohler/

I also have PDF copies I could email...

I am about to try to figure out where my 6.5CV is leaking oil. Its not the fill, filter or low pressure sending unit. Anyone have any thougths?

I found a new on eBay for 225. Once I get the old one out, I'm going to have it rebuilt and either sell it or keep it for a spare.
Thanks for all the suggestions

Prioritytoo explained the joyous removal process pretty well.

After I had mine removed, I drilled holes in the engine cover to allow access to the bolts holding the starter on. If the starter has to be removed in the future, I just stick a socket on an extension into the holes and off comes the starter. At least that's the general idea.

The engine on the 6.5cz is a Honda GX360. You can buy parts for the motor specifically without necessarily going through Kohler.

You can try this link on eBay for a starter:

I don't like the lack of a guarantee. However, there have been other starters listed on eBay as well for far less than Kohler's price. Another concern would be regarding spark/ignition suppression.

My starter was messed up and I repaired it using parts from a Toyota starter. The motor on mine spun fine by itself but wasn't engaging properly. I basically used the solenoid/bendix to repair mine. I wish I could have used the new starter by itself but that didn't work out. Mostly I was glad to have it working and I was in a time crunch at the time.

I bought the new one off eBay, installed it, and it did the same thing as the old one. It would not fully engage the flywheel. So I call a Kohler service tech and he immediately told me I had a bad ground and the starter was not getting enough power. Cleaned all the ground cables (they were not that bad) and it worked. Even thought one of the first things I always check when I’m troubleshooting electoral problems or a nonstarting issues is the ground, it just never occurred to me in this case. Well $269.00, 5 hours, two trips to the boat (75 miles on way), some swearing, and a few skinned knuckles later, a valuable lesson learned, and I have a spare starter.

This is an ancient thread, but is there any chance anyone has a copy of the service manual they could send me? I've been searching for a couple weeks with no luck

what model do you have? I have a service manual for Models L600, L654. Can't send it to you though, and it's still a book, that I don't want to separate- so feeding it into a scanner wouldn't work. But if it's only a few pages you need, I might be able to make that work. Below is the TOC - anything specific you are looking for?

I'm looking for any info on troubleshooting a no crank issue. I am unsure of the starter and have chased 12v around but it's not getting to the starter.
