I am hoping Vic chimes in on my question but I'm sure others out there might also have my answer. To winterize my LectraSan, the manual says to pump it out. My unit is in a compartment with very little head room so getting something into the top of the unit to pump out is challenging. Could I just fill the unit with concentrated salt solution by flushing it through the toilet? I have a separate salt feed tank that does this every time you flush so why not dump the same solution in the toilet to winterize the unit. Is there any harm in leaving a concentrated salt solution in the LectraSan over the winter?

Wow, that's a good question, Craig. I know antifreeze will ruin the treatment plates, but not sure about salt. However, at what temperature does salt water freeze, 21F? We do get a lot colder than that here in MD.

Yeah Kurt, that is why I'm wondering if I can make a super saturated salt solution and load up the system. I am doing a test with the same solution sitting outside my shop. There was frost this morning but no ice in the jug.

I wonder if the "cheap case of vodka" method might be better? Again, it all comes down to not freezing and expanding and also not damaging the plates.

I replaced my plates a few years ago so I don't want to do anything that might cause harm.

I got tired of feeding the salt feed and having to replace plates and switched to a Purasan.

I think if anything ever major goes wrong with the lectraSan, maybe I will look into the Purasan. My unit was brand new when I bought the boat (2003). I do get tired of adding salt solution to the tank and we also dump a shot of salt into the toilet with every flush. My wife gets some strange faces when she goes to Wally world and buys 10 or 15 containers of table salt.

Hi Craig, I don't have LectraSans anymore, but I did still have them last Fall. To empty them, I used a short tube that was long enough to get to the bottom. Remember there are (I think) 2 chambers. I fed it into the top of the unit, then hooked a wet/dry vac to the end of the tube. I got them pretty well emptied. It shouldn't take much clearance space to get a tube into that top cap. I'm not sure that I like the salt idea.

I have seem people fill them with pink stuff, but you must be sure that the pink is all flushed completely out before you run a treat cycle. Of course this method contrary to the instruction manual.

Hi Eric, I thought about using a shop vac but did not want to smell it all up if you get the picture. I was thinking about using my oil extractor but then I will a lot of water mixed in with my waste oil.

Are you still up north or down in Florida?

Craig,

Wal-Mart carries this Penzoil pump in the automotive section for about $10. I used to use it before I started heating my waste area (with an Xtreme bilge heater). I also used to run 2 or 3 cycles on the Electro Scan without adding any new waste to it. This really made what's in there much less offensive.

Kurt, great idea. I also did run the cycle a few times before I went on the hard. I bet my local Tractor Supply might have that pump.
