Longfin smelt decline

I read that CALFED story too. Money got porkbarreled away. Lots of good preliminary studies were done, but with no leadership from the top to incorporate government agencies on common goals, implementation never happened.

The same thing is going on in the special legislative session right now. Each party has it's pet projects, special interest groups run the show and there is still no big picture vision of what to do with the watershed and no central governing body for it's administration. They want to us give them gobs of bond money in February so they can throw it away again?

In theory, I still think that CALFED was the right approach to balancing the needs of water and land use with conservation of natural resources. The rubber began to hit the road when water users and developers learned that CALFED would not be another DWR. Poor CALFED management and funding cuts took a toll and the organization went into hibernation. I know that the CALFED Science Department is still active.

Governor Schwarzenegger thought he could find an alternative to CALFED with the Delta Vision Blue Ribbon Task Force. These "visionaries" recommended new ways that California businesses could invest in the Delta.

CALFED was in big trouble two years ago:

And I was foolish enough to think that getting rid of Gray Davis would get rid of the special interest groups too. Boy was I naive!

The whole special interest / lobbyist thing is huge to me right now. I can't think of anyway we can get effective government without reigning it all in somehow -- but I also can't think of anyway to really get a handle on it that doesn't mess with the Constitution. Ah, the joy of democracy.

I don't think "Special Interests Government" is what our founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the Constitution!

Sure they did. "they" were the special interests. farmers, business owners etc. The "special interests" almost restricted voting to white, male, landowners.

That's right. I guess I've forgotten more then I remember........
