Lost belt at 3500 - resolved

Define won't start. Does the engine turn over?.........D.......

Injected? ( Scan codes?)

Could the belt have whipped off a fuel pump lead? Or one to a sensor? Does the pump run briefly when the key is turned On?

Checked fuses on engine?

Is the engine (ECC) getting over 10 volts when cranking?

Has the cause of the thrown belt been nailed down? (Seizing pulley-driven item, rusty bent or loose pulley, pulleys not all in the same plane, ragged belt, idler/tensioning pulley no longer able to move it's normal full spring-loaded travel due to belt dust buildup or corrosion, something fell in the belt path to de-rail, .....?

Is there a lanyard kill switch on those engines? That would kill ignition but not cranking.

What caused the belt to come off? There has to be a reason, they do not fall off by accident. When cranking, do it make any popping sound like its trying to start?

What constitutes 'severe shut down'? Was the ignition just turned off at 3500? I can't see that causing irrepairable harm, but listen for engine noise, (clacking from valves/rockers) when trying to start. Coulda' bent push rods.

Might have just sucked up lots of gas and she's flooded. Full throttle while cranking for flooded condition.

What does cranks but wont turn over mean?? Cranks but will not start?

What is severe shutdown??

Are all the pulleys in line or missing?

Any strange noises when cranking? Did he hit something?

Thanks for the replies.
Severe shut down = boat was running at 3500 and engine cut out just stopped. No alarms just stopped.
No strange noises when turning over, Cranks but will not start.
Does not think he hit anything, No bang and props and drive look fine.
no lanyard.
They are going over sensors today, mechanic thinks the oil sensor failed and shut the engine down, and that through the belt. I dont think that is the cause. I am thinking water pump or alt froze up but he say he can turn them. but I would think he would hear a squeal or the belt would have shredded, he states it looked fine just on the floor.

So it was like the engine just turned off? Something must have been going on prior to shut down if the belt didn't cause it.

Can't think of a thing.

it was a Fried distributer cap. Mechanic states that sometimes when a engine shuts down at high RPM the belt can get slung if it was loose.....learn something everyday i guess.

I was about to tell you the same thing. On the single belt set ups, this can happen if it is shut down at high rpm. I had a 4.3 do me the same way when my ignition module went south, flipped the belt right off of it.......D.........

Thanks for all the replies. Happy ending $40 fix $500 in parts he doesnt have to replace next year! Back home 2 days late.

It seems a little odd a distributor cap would shut down the engine like turning off a switch, but I'm glad for your dad the cause was just a cap and the shutdown apparently didn't cause any other real damage. Thanks for the follow-up news.
