Mandeville, 4th of July

Flutter,

I had about 150 feet of rode in 40 feet of water - not enough. The 50 feet was the lenght of the retractable line in the anchor bouy, and that was the bigger problem - I think it "lifted" the front of the anchor so it never dug in properly. I have never used the device before - it is actually a pretty expensive unit but I must have done something wrong. Live and learn! It was a fun weekend, and like you, I will stick to the sides, away from the crowd next time. I bunch from the marina stayed at the bedrooms on Little Potato Slough, and thats not a bad idea either. Still a good crowd for fun, but not too crazy!

Jim

Manticore,

Great photos - thank you! Even when you look at all the pictures, it's hard to understand the magnitude of the event - it is one of the biggest parties I have ever seen!

Thanks,
Jim

If you want an anchor that holds, get a Fortress. I use it as a secondary anchor but since my plow anchor always drags, it ends up being the primary making the plow anchor pretty useless.

Steve, call me stupid: your link only took me to the home page instead of your photos. I even turned off my popup blocker....what did I do wrong?????

Jim, sorry I misunderstood what you were saying.......I'm not familiar with your gadget, but I think having a boat's length of chain on your rode would be helpful! Yea, it is fun to see the crazies having fun and then find an out of the way, safe anchorage to actually enjoy the fireworks! A warning though: if the wind dies down and your boat is close to the tules/reeds, the mosquitoes will make your life miserable! Stay at least 20 ft off of all tules if their is no wind, aka a heat wave.

Liz,

Not sure why you only go to the home page. When I click the link it goes right to the pics. Any way from the home page www.justastateofmind.smugmug.com, click on the Galleries link, and then on 'Boats', and then on 'Mandeville 2008'. That should do it. Feel free to look around at the other pics too - some of them I'm quite proud of!

Just tried again. Now they have a "having technical difficulties" disclaimer posted. Maybe some hacked in and messed thing up for them. I'll try again later.

Thanks!

Nice pics, it's funny to look at someone else's photos and see lots of people that you know. I see you were tied up with my buddy Terry L nd my dock neighbors, Pat and Gary must have been close by a I saw their boats and a pic of them in the dinghy.

We were in a raft-up of about 18 boats several rows behind the "always gracious " Sea Ray club. For them it is never enough to have a nice raft-up; they always have to rope off the area to keep other boaters from getting close or in front of them. They certainly seem to have forgotten that part of the joy of boating is the camaraderie of meeting others who share your passion.

Glad to hear you had fun! I saw Comfortably Numb out, but when I went to visit, they were gone (I guess their anchor dragging story explains that). I never did see or hear from Ruby Ray, but hopefully they had a good experience as well.

Oh well, another year in he bag!

Dave,

How do you know Terry? He's our best boating buddy (actually, our best friend, in general)- he's been a kind of mentor to us, showing us the ropes, teaching us things we never even thought of. Just a great guy.

Pat and Gary (also friends of Terry) were just a little off our stbd, a few boats away. Also really nice folks.

Nice pics Steve! I see you got a couple of shots of the San Joaquin Yacht Club group. Granada and Money Pit were two of the boats in your pic. All in all, it was crazy fun, but it doesn't look like anything out of place and I didn't see anything too crazy going on when I cruised through. I haven't heard any horror stories of sunk boats, etc either. That is always good! Some of the water/fire power was pretty over the top though. I can imagine some of those would hurt if a direct shot hit someone.....

Steve,

Terry used to be a muckety muck in my business's management association (Sheet Metal Air Conditioning National Association). He is a great guy and was the victim of politicking at it's worst. I have known Terry for wellover thirty years and can't remember anyone ever saying a bad word about him. You've got a good mentor there, tell him I said so!
