I'm looking at a 1993 Chaparral 270. I called the factory in GA to ask a few questions about the hulls. First, they told me Chaparral's have no plywood in the bottom of the hulls, yet have some in the Transom and foredecks. I learned that the encapsulation process and drilling into the encapsulation are the biggest differences between manufacturers. I also learned that around 1995, they started to utilize a better quality plywood, "XL".
Can any surveyor out there comment on fiberglass thickness/quality and encapsulation quality between the mass market brands like Chaparral, Sea Ray, Regal, Monterey, Rinker, Bayliner, etc. What brand had the least problems on a year over year basis?
Also, is the "XL" improved plywood in 1995 a big deal?
Thanks,
RH
