More stuff in the SF Chronicle on Delta topics today.
Two articles were in the print edition. One talked about US Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff touring the levees and gave some additional info on the "emergency" repairs the Governor is proposing at a $75 to $100 million cost:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/02/28/BAGM5HFU4U1.DTL
(A tidbit that I hadn't seen before in this piece is that 20 of these 24 proposed "emergency" repairs are on the Sacramento River south of Chico and north of Steamboat Slough, which splits from the Sacramento about 1.5 miles south of Courtland. My cynical side notes how "Sacramento focused" these repairs would be.)
The other print article talked about declining fish populations and opinions that taking less water for Southern California is the only solution:

A later on-line article indicates the Gov. has asked for $23.55 million in federal funds for levee repair:
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/02/28/MNGICHG4AK8.DTL
Reading these articles provides a good indication of how politicians and political discourse often avoid obvious solutions to problems.
