Wednesday, my wife, four of her former female workmates, one of their husbands, and I are cruising down the river headed for NY Harbor for a little sightseeing on a gorgeous day. So here we are, five women and two men, running at a comfortable 26-27 mph right down the middle of the river around 1:45 pm, with not another boat in sight. We are passing Tarrytown, just getting ready to pass under the TZB when a small CG boat appears out of nowhere with his blue lights on and approaching our port side. I come off plane immediately and ease the boat into neutral fully expecting to be boarded and inspected. Instead of the expected boarding they ask if I had heard or seen a boat in distress, possibly sinking, anywhere between Haverstraw and the TZB.
I obviously hadn't because I would have offered whatever assistance I could...but if we saw all of three boats between Haverstraw and the TZB on the ride down, that was a lot.
That was it. They said have a nice day and they went on their way.
So I'm wondering if that was just a bogus question...possibly after noticing my 2006 USCGA courtesy inspection sticker on the port side windshield...or maybe because when they saw five middle aged females on board, they just didn't wan't to deal with that scenario.
So, has anyone heard about a possible boat sinking on that beautiful Wednesday afternoon?
By the way, the harbor was just gorgeous and the day on the river could not have been better.
