Received an email from Carver today inviting me to preview the new Carver 34 Fly.

It appears to be a soft launch of a prototype with pretty amateurish rendered views of the exterior only (no interior layout), and showing only basic specs.

Initial impressions: mostly good, although much will depend on the interior layout, engine configuration, performance, complete specs, accessibility of mechanicals, etc.

Things I liked:

- walk-around decks
- flush aft deck (versus a cockpit or aft cabin) with off-center transom door
- large command bridge with ample seating
- decent working foredeck
- large integral swim platform
- transom storage
- stairs to bridge (versus a ladder)
- good sized salon windows

Things I didn't like:

- command bridge looks like it was slapped on like a poorly fitting hat
- engine air intakes are fairly far aft making it look like the engines will be placed aft possibly requring v-drives (I prefer direct drives)
- bridge helm not on centerline
- toerail on sidecks (versus raised bulwarks)
- no radar arch
- starboard aft deck seat appears to impede access to bridge stairs

The length-to-beam ratio puts it a touch on the beamy side, but that will also result in greater interior volume.

Overall, I kinda like it.

Take a look at their website, there are some additional views.

Personally, I am thrilled that they are getting back to this size of boat where I may be able to afford one (used) in a few years.

I like that it has the Carver functionality and creative use of space but also boasts what might be actual decent aesthetics in real life. I especially like the cockpit coming where it meets the aft entry door to the salon, quite reminiscent of the 80's 28 Mariner/Voyager duo (my first boat).

Let's hope they make an attractive mariner (under 42') for the first time in over 30 years!

Better yet, let's see a modern version of the Montego line, in a 35-42' range!

Overall, I see it as a positive, if it is executed right.

That same position of the intakes and the lack of exhaust ports, not to mention current trends, suggest IPS.

Ooooh I'm eager to see it - hopefully its a boat I can afford sometime!!

This is the first in a new series of Carver Yachts. Hopefully not the smallest, and hopefully they'll do an express line (Montego's). I'm eager to see what direction they go with Marquis doing the really big Euro stuff.

I like the looks of the 34 Fly. I also like the lines of the new 54 Voyager, but I'm undecided on moving the galley up.

Have to say, I like to see them building 34' range. Where we boat, 40+ is just too much. I love my 32' Mariner, perfect size for two of us. Big enough to not be cramped, but small enough that we can get around the water ways easy and not worry too much whether we will fit somewhere.

I like the galley up in the 54V, Seth. It makes the otherwise seemingly useless pilothouse, useful. And the beam on that 34 Fly...13', that's huge!

Carver builds their boats with family use in mind.
They have a lot of room inside and out.
I like the smaller boats, due to handling alone or with only me and the wife.
