Hey Glenn & Prospective,
Thanks for the concern, but no worries necessary since health, business and family are all doing fine. Aside from other diversions - been really busy playing on the boat and maintaining the business.
Mike Sibley actually emailed me last night wondering why I haven't been posting on BE, so thought I'd see what was new. It also looks like I let my membership expire and feel kinda nekid w/o that little anchor and avatar under my name.
Regarding robin's question concerning anchoring in Npt Harbor - our exclusive use of a close friend's private mooring in Brenton Cove was terminated last Fall, after he decided to give it up to the City. We then thought we'd miss the security that ball and chain provided while asleep and when leaving the boat unattended for shore trips. However, we've anchored overnight this season on several occasions in the designated anchorage area TLM mentioned and have never dragged . . . even during a 30 knot blow a couple weeks ago.
The area is bounded on the north by the east/west harbor entrance channel - south of Goat Island. It's also south of the band marked on the NOAA chart as a CABLE ZONE. To the east is a dense mooring field with the Thames Street waterfront beyond and Kings Park along the southern boundary - as well as another mooring field. Directly west of this area is the Ida Lewis Yacht Club rocks and due southwest, you will find a long stone jetty leading off King Park (by the launch ramp) with a free dinghy dock, owned and maintained by the City of Newport. This is where we land with the inflatable to walk the dog ashore.
The best place to take the dinghy to the downtown and shops/restaurant district, is at Ann Street Pier - another City maintained dinghy dock. It's located between Christies Pier and the Newport Onshore Marina basin - not that far from the anchorage and is also free. Most wharf attractions are within easy walking distance from that point.
