Hello,

I was wondering if there is anywhere to anchor around Newport harbor, so we can take the inflatable into the dock and walk around a bit?
Thanks.

You might be able to anchor over by Fort Adams, but it is kind of exposed and can get rough there. You could also get a mooring from the harbor master. I'm not sure if they have day rates, but even for overnight it is not too expensive.

I've been to Newport a few times and never saw an area with boats anchored.

There is an area to anchor in Newport harbor, just north of the Brenton Cove mooring field, but south of the marked buried cable.

You can anchor outside of Ida Lewis yacht club or in Brenton Cove. Ida Lewis has a bright Red and White stripe canopy on their building. We have done both for years. Brenton cove is a little calmer due to the protection from the cliffs, but it is a longer dinghy ride into town. Launches will bring you to either location.

I'm surprised "True Blue" (Steve L.) hasn't chimed in here, being it's a Newport related topic. I haven't seen him post in a while. Anyone hear from him lately? I haven't talked to him in a few months. I should give him a call soon. Hope he's okay.

Glen, wondered the same thing about True Blue. According to the RO list, he's listed as an "Ex-Member" since April I think.

I enjoyed his local knowledge. Hope he comes back.

Hey Glenn & Prospective,

Thanks for the concern, but no worries necessary since health, business and family are all doing fine. Aside from other diversions - been really busy playing on the boat and maintaining the business.

Mike Sibley actually emailed me last night wondering why I haven't been posting on BE, so thought I'd see what was new. It also looks like I let my membership expire and feel kinda nekid w/o that little anchor and avatar under my name.

Regarding robin's question concerning anchoring in Npt Harbor - our exclusive use of a close friend's private mooring in Brenton Cove was terminated last Fall, after he decided to give it up to the City. We then thought we'd miss the security that ball and chain provided while asleep and when leaving the boat unattended for shore trips. However, we've anchored overnight this season on several occasions in the designated anchorage area TLM mentioned and have never dragged . . . even during a 30 knot blow a couple weeks ago.

The area is bounded on the north by the east/west harbor entrance channel - south of Goat Island. It's also south of the band marked on the NOAA chart as a CABLE ZONE. To the east is a dense mooring field with the Thames Street waterfront beyond and Kings Park along the southern boundary - as well as another mooring field. Directly west of this area is the Ida Lewis Yacht Club rocks and due southwest, you will find a long stone jetty leading off King Park (by the launch ramp) with a free dinghy dock, owned and maintained by the City of Newport. This is where we land with the inflatable to walk the dog ashore.

The best place to take the dinghy to the downtown and shops/restaurant district, is at Ann Street Pier - another City maintained dinghy dock. It's located between Christies Pier and the Newport Onshore Marina basin - not that far from the anchorage and is also free. Most wharf attractions are within easy walking distance from that point.
