No Crab Pot "Entrance Channel" on the Sassafras?

Area boaters are very aware that crabbers set pots across the entire width of the mouth of the Sassafras (a coule of miles wide), making it difficult to enter or exit the river. My earlier comment got me to wonder what we might have to do to get DNR to consider such a proposal. I'm thinking about a 100 yard wide "channel" setup where crabbers could not legally set pots. This would give us a way to easily get into and out of the river, as well as the crabbers not losing pots due to "accidents".

Maryland DNR requires a petition with 25 people to sign in order to get it on the agenda for 2008 consideration. So that I can gauge if we might get 25 signatures, I'd like to open the discussion here. If enough interest, I'd take the point to see if we could make this happen.

I will sign a petition, I think its a great idea, our neighborhood dock is east of the RT 213 bridge and it is very dicey at the rivers mouth.

Jim, I will sign it and bring it over to Skipjack and I am sure I can get all the signatures you will need!
 
I am relatively new to Skipjack and I totally agree with your postings. Please add me and do come to Skipjack to get all the signatures you'll need.
 
I will gladly sign - last week I had quite a time navigating through the entrance. I wonder if it is just the crabbers from Turners Creek.... I'm over on G7

Float free channels exist on Middle River to permit easy access from the bay to the river. In fact, look at any chart, and you'll see where they are - two forks; one channel from the north, one from the south and a main float free channel into Middle River. I can't see why DNR wouldn't consider such for the Sassafras River.

I was not aware Middle River already had a "no float zone"; this confirms the thinking is reasonable and might be able to get accomplished! THX

The South River also has a "float-free" channel to enable boats to get in and out. I think it's ludicrous for any river not to have it!
 
I'm sure you'll get lots of signatures for this. Add me to the list.

The "Float-Free Channel" is common on the western shore. We have them on several of the rivers here.
 
Seems like we should proceed on this to get it onto the 2008 agenda. I'll download the petition information and initiate the process. I'll let everyone know when this is completed.

I would suggest you get the Sassafras River Yacht Club involved. They will support it and they do have some clout. Let me know if you need a contact but you can also find them on the web at www.sasryc.org.

Been very busy with winterizing two boats, new job and moving onto the boat full time in Inner Harbor. Finally, the laptop crapped out and had to rebuild it. I have downloaded the application and will circulate it shortly. Thanks for your patience.

Hey Jim!

Spending another winter in Baltimore on the new boat? A couple of boats from my dock are down there somewhere for the winter too. Another buddy of mine moved his boat to Georgetown under a shed for the winter.

Got this work assignment somewhat unexpectedly, so we took the opportunity to begin a live aboard adventure a bit unprepared - no AF in engines, etc. The boat has never been in cold weather, so there are lots of things to do (engines, plumbing lines, leaky sliding windows, broken heat pumps, etc. Been busy, but will be over the hump by the end of this week.
