I had an oil analysis completed on a boat that we are looking at purchasing. The analysis came back well except for one thing. There was 0.24% and 0.28% water in the port and Stbd engines, respectively. This is 24 and 28 hundreths of a percent by volume.

Could this be condensation from sitting around and not being run in a few weeks?

Results on marine engines always seem to have a little moisture in them. So long as there is no wear factor in realtion to the condition youll be fine. What type engines does this vessel have?

They are 1997 7.4L Merc MPIs. All of the metals, etc. were in the low acceptable range, or lower. The compression check came out good as well. No coolant in either engine, too.

Was this taken in a warmed up engine, with engine at an idle? How long since last oil change. (One of the major functions of an oil analysis is to follow wear patterns, but if the oil has recently been chaned, oil analysis is of little value--except gross comtaminates).

Sample was taken during the compression check of the engines. The oil was from last fall's change before storage and recent spring launch.

I really don't see a problem with your results. Change the fluid and filters and re test after 10 hrs to make sure.

You didn't pull this oil analysis--someone else did from the drained oil before storage? Al, not sure that the retest after 10 hours is going to be much help, as this is a pre pruchase. Most likely this is condensation--and not a problem.

Bob, I agree. As you know its always good to know where your at right from the start with a new boat. Just trying to be careful of any type contamination that may present a problem later on.

BTW: Its nice to see you back on the forum... Hope all is well. Al
