You know the old saying "it's too good to be true" but here goes. I am in the market for a 2-4 year old cuddy or cabin cruiser and I found a 2005 Crownline 235 CCR at a local boat broker. The price just seeems to good to be true. He is asking $35,900 for the boat. It has pretty much everything on it and has a Merc 5.0L MPI w/Bravo III drive with 51 hours. I personally checked the boat out and other than it being dirty and having minor scratches in the gelcoat and a small gouge in the gelcoat on the bow (from the anchor?) there is no apparent hull damage or anything else visible on the exterior except for the outdrive and the trim tabs. The OD is a sooty gray color with no visible leaks. The dealer says the drive has been painted with coating (anti-fouling?, barrier?). The tabs are also painted with this but are rusty on the tops. In my opinion, the drive looks like it belongs on a 4 year old boat that has never been out of the water. The props are off and the anodes are pretty eaten up. The bottom paint on the hull has also been scratched off in a couple of spots and right in the middle of the keel. The interior is in great shape with no signs of moisture or leakage. There is a small cut in one of the cushions and a small hole in the clear plastic on one of the camper top sides. The engine compartment looks brand new with no visible signs of leakage or oil. The dealer is claiming that the boat is still under warranty (Crownline offers one of the best warranties on the market). I called Crownline and gave them the hull number and they told me all of the warranties would transfer for a fee of $500. Not bad I guess for transfer of a limited lifetime hull, transom and stringer warranty and 4 years on the other stuff. They also told me that the boat was sold at the local Crownline dealer in April 2005. The dealer says he is selling it for the guy because the guy brought the boat and decided boating wasn't for him, yet it is being sold at a boat broker and marina that did not originally sell this boat nor sells any other type of NEW boat. So tell me, what am I missing? The price seems too low based on what I see others (2004's) selling for. NADA value is higher and BUC has no value yet for this boat as it is too new. Is there something seroiusly wrong with this boat? I of course would have the boat surveyed. Should I do an informal survey with a surveyor before making an offer or should I run, not walk, away from this one?
