Hello all -
I have a 2005 Rinker Fiesta Vee 270 with VP power

Been out of the water since I winterized this boat in Fall 2010.

I had the boat all ready to go for Sprig 2011 when financial hardship hit. I feel fortunate to still have this boat.

Now I am going back in the water.

-> please help me form a to-do list. I must occupy my slip within 30 days or I lose it.

- in spring 2011 I changed the bellows and the drive shaft and internals looked very good. This bellows has never seen salt water or even been exposed to direct sun. Do I need to consider changing it?
- Drive oil was also replaced at this time with VP 30 weight full synthetic. so same question.. replace or not?
-Engine oil and filter just changed a few months ago so good there.
-Impeller was changed in Spring 2010 and has one season of about 25-30 hours of use on it.
Change it?

What else? Can you guys help me out?

thanks!

Is it a Stern Drive? If it is you better look again at what you put into the stern drive for lubricant. I don’t believe 30wt is the correct lube. Replace the impeller.

Michael - exactly right! I actually used the right oil but just had a brain freeze there. I used the VP synthetic drive oil. I think it is 75W90 weight. I have more of it in my garage

I am no expert but I would think your rubber would be good. Where was it stored? For sure feel it up.

VP uses regular motor oil in the drive. Pretty neat. They also use normal mechanic tools. Another neat thing.

Drain a tiny bit of drive oil to check for any water from possible condensation. Do a test run to check and evaluate the impeller.(running temp) VP impellers are easy to change so might be worth a change for peace of mind. I think you're good to go but think bellows and U-joints.Oh, and run the tilt/trim to make sure it runs smoothly. Probably run all electricals , too.

I think VP used engine oil in the older style drives but regular 90w gear oil in the newer style ones. I'd say you might want to get rid of the gas in the tank, replace the fuel filter and replace the raw water impeller since it may have taken a set being in one spot for over 3 years. The bellows, will be fine esp if the drive was kept down.

Did you store with empty or full fuel tanks? If full, your fuel is 4 years old and no amount of stabilizer will keep it good for that amount of time. I'd get rid of the remaining fuel on board and start with fresh. I wouldn't replace any fuel filters until you run some fresh gas thru the system.

Agree with all the above. I would add to the list to lubricate the shifter/throttle cables with OHBs cable lube gizmo.

Old Houseboater originally posted this - I did it (worked great) and kept it for future reference.

"Once in a while a request comes up for information on how to lubricate control cables.

You need a foot and a half of 3/8 ID reinforced plastic hose from Lowes, a tire valve, three hose clamps, a tire pump or small 12 volt air compressor with a gage, and MMO.

Shave the tire valve down and clamp it in one end of the hose.

1. Remove the fittings from one end of the cable.

2. Put 3 inches of Marvel Mystery Oil in the hose for every 20 feet of cable length.

3. Double clamp oil filled hose over cable.

4. Apply and maintain 50 PSI of air to the tire chuck. DO NOT EXCEED 50 PSI.

5. It will take 10 to 30 minutes for oil to appear at the other end. then your done. Have rags to catch the oil if your in a sensitive area.

I suggest safety glasses just in case somethings blows apart, but I have never had a problem. My save rate on cables is about 75%. I did all my cables every 2 years as PM but I was not on salt water."

Unless you have genuine Gasoline and not Ethanol I suggest getting rid of the old fuel and replacing the filters.
It's great to see someone getting back into boating.
Congrats on being able to hang on to the boat and finally get time to enjoy it!
Bill

I think your biggest potential problem is the fuel in the tanks.

Hello all and thanks for so many good ideas.

The boat has been run each summer - not that often or for long. After 2 years I completely emptied the tank of gas. This I did shortly after superstorm Sandy. The gas was still good and I used it in my cars (gas shortage) and a borrowed generator. The gas in there now is about a year old and is stablized.

I will change the gas filter and the impeller and also replace the VHS antenna that perished in the storm. I've got the normal spring stuff to do like bottom/drive paint.

I will think about lubing those cables - that sounds like a great idea and I have access to an air compressor

Is anyone using Petit Barnacle Barrier for props? I thought I would give this a try. Seems counter intuitive that the props would even need an anti-foul treatment given the rapid reciprocating mass occurring. But not wanting to be sorry 3 months after launch so thought I would give this a try. I will also use it on the trim tabs

Anyone with feedback on this product?

thanks,
FB

I've been using it on props, rudders, shafts and trim tabs for 3 years . I've been satisfied with the results. There is apparently a much cheaper, identical product from Rustoleum which several here have used. i cant't remember the name.
