Vic, I've got a PHII that's starting to squeak really bad while pumping. Is there any kind of grease I should be using on this unit?
Also, it's starting to not pump so great as well. Should I get the repair kit and re-build the pump?

I flush a splash of cooking oil once in a while and that squeak goes away. Somebody here will probably tell us it's a bad thing to do for some reason, but it has worked for me.

Let's see, it leaks and it doesn't pump well.....yeah, I'd say it's rebuild time.

From the PHII Owner's Manual:

MAINTENANCE
Super Lube® (#SL) applied to the piston rod will prolong the
life of the Piston Shaft Seal. This should be done every spring
and fall or more regularly if the head is used frequently.
Applying Super Lube to all moving parts is also recommended.

If it's squeaking from inside the pump when you pump it, chances are that the vegetable oil will quiet it down nicely. But the vegetable oil doesn't last, it washes away. So it will likely have to be done every weekend. Add about 2 oz. (2 "glugs" out of the bottle) to the toilet bowl, then pump it. You'll notice the difference right away.

The pump should be rebuilt every 3-5 years - how old is it?

The biggest reason that many discourage the use of vegetable oil is that it rises to the surface, and floats on top of the water in a holding tank, stopping incoming air from being able to get to the contents of the tank. But if you pump the tank out regularly, and you don't go nuts with the vegetable oil, it shouldn't really be a problem.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help.

Vic,
I put a little Olive Oil in the head and wow, what a difference. Easier to pump and 10 times quieter.
I was thinking about getting a rebuild kit for the pump, but it looks like I'm getting some leaking from the pump housing and I don't think a rebuild kit's going to take care of that.
Can I buy just the pump itself?
Will we be seeing you at Annapolis?

As it stands as of now, I'll be at Annapolis for the Power Boat Show.

The pump is available as a replacement unit, # PHIIPUMP,

http://www.boatfix.com/elec/raracc.asp?parttype=php (scroll down, 4th item from the bottom).

The pump is the "heart" of the unit, and you'll essentially have a new head after replacing it. It comes complete with the piston and rod, and all the valves included with it. It does not include a new pump handle, however.

Note that the olive or other vegetable oil doesn't last, it washes away, and must be re-applied fairly often. But what the hey, it's plenty cheap!
