I have taken my kids out fishing a couple of times the past few weeks. So far we have caught a crab and a grandfather. Does anyone have any idea where I could take them that is almost a guarantee to catch a fish regardless what it is? My son seems to enjoy fishing, which is getting him more interested in boating, and I would hate for him to lose that interest.

Thanks,
MJK

The south end of Croton point, you'll see plenty of boats fishing there all the time.

That's where I was yesterday. We anchored on the south side of Croton, and we could see fish jumping, but never close enough to land any. We were using worms, maybe I'll try a few different baits..

South tip of Croton or down near the TZ bridge. Blood worms usually work. Not much running this time of year. In a few weeks Stripped bass should be running again though. Best time to fish the Hudson is in April.

if you would like to come up to the kingston area there are lots of places for fishing
baits can be any thing from chick peas to worms
my son eric would be more then glad to help you
he uses 6lb test for fish that run 15 to 40 lbs
loves to teach others his skills

As everyone has said, the south side of croton is a good spot. Try to fish just off of the rock ledge that comes off of the point. You need to fish the bottom...Worms are good but right now Bunker, hearing or smelt is better for the blue fish. Its best to rig the bait so it drifts about 2-3 foot off the bottm. There are pleny of white perch in there as well which the kids usually enjoy...

Another spot thats good for pearch is on the east side of the river just north of georges island and south of viking boat yard. This is where the cable crosses the river. Its the old oyster beds and perch feed in this area alot. Blood worms worked great there....

Another spot I used to fish for giant cat fish was just off of rockland lake behind the lighted bouy on the rocks. Anchor on the west side of the rocks about half way to the shore line. Worms on the bottom work great there...

If you want pearch another good bait to use is shrimp.

Ok one last spot is just north of Jones point on the east side of the river. Its called fish island. Look on a chart if you have one. As you head towards the bear mountain bridge on the east side is a little rock island. Fish between the island and shore. Be careful in there the rocks do extnd out a ways and there used to be a large tree branch stuck on the north end.

While your up that way you can also fish the west side in towards the south side of Iona island. This is a reseved fish tributory. Usually good for pearch. Get shallow in there. Fish in about 6-8 feet of water...

Hope some of this helps, I know what its like to take young kids fishing...

Wow this is some great info. I will definitely give some of these a shot. Thank you!

Caryl-d - I believe I saw you pulling out of Haverstraw gas docks yesterday evening, beutiful boat!

Yes we where there about 4:30-5:00 at the pump out...We have become rather fond of the boat. Funny thing is if you asked me about 4 years ago if I would go with an aft I would have said no way....Now its the only way to go....

If you go north of Newburgh you are in fresh water and can catch anything you might catch in a lake. That includes sunnies, perch, bass, catfish, and other species. Up in the Rondout the kids can fill a boat in an afternoon with the stuff they catch!!!
