Planning Trip up the Hudson

The Admiral & I have decided to take a few friends on a few day boat trip up the Hudson sometime during July. We'll leave Belmar early am and either stop near NYC for an overnight or continue on to Haverstraw.

Other than West Point, what else is in the area that would be cool to see? Someone once mentioned a ship graveyard, but I can't find it online or my charts. Also I've heard mention of "End of the World" - what's that all about?

Any suggestions for particular sights or things to do on the water or in the area would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if we do it on a weekend, how crowded will Haverstraw be??? Any issues getting diesel up that way??

I would fuel up in Atlantic Highlands Much less than in NY. Panco is in the Haverstraw area. You can also get fuel at Alpine Boat Basin. That's the last stop in NJ. Not sure if they have Diesel though.

I also recommend Striped Bass Restaurant for Dock and Dine. It's at the Tarrytown Marina just north of the Tappan Zee.

Bannerman Island is interesting to see. That's in the Newburgh area. It's past Haverstraw though.

in my opinion, once at West Point, it is a long run to anything new to see, that meaning you will see beautiful cut throughs, trees, etc, which doesn't change much north of West Point. Havestraw is OK, but the town south of West Point (sorry I do not remember the name, it is where the fireworks are each year) is very pretty. I would recommend spending a night on the hook just north of the GWB. It is pretty and deep near the Jersey shore, 18' about 100 feet offshore. You are well outside the channel and it is gorgeous, have done it more times than I can remember.

Once up by the Tappan Zee, there is a cute little town called Piermont. Nice little artsy place, good for a lunch break and hour or two walk through.

The bay near Havestraw is a nicer stop than Havestraw itself, imho. The drywall plant kills it for me.

Then, once further north, there is Indian Point, which is cool to look at.

I would recommend against doing a circle of NYC, as the run down the East River is not so great. I do recommend, however, taking a trip up the east river from downtown to about the UN. It is very pretty there and you get a great view of the Chrysler building.

Going up the river is a beautiful experience. "World's End" is the "s" curve just north of West Point - it is the deepest part of the river at over 120'.

If you continue north of West Point, Bannerman's Island, which housed a Civil War Arsenal is on your right - don't try to pass it between it and the eastern shore, it is VERY shallow in there. It is being restored.

A bit further up, on the western shore is Newburgh, where you can dock and dine at some pretty good restaurants.

The "ship graveyard" is probably the old WWII mothball fleet that used to be in the bay across from Indian Point - all the ships are now gone.

I recommend that you fuel up in NJ, it is MUCH cheaper, however, you can get diesel at Haverstraw. Weekends are usually pretty busy there, if you are thinking of staying there, call and make a reservation. They have an excellent restaurant on the water at Haverstraw.

Striped Bass at the Tarrytown Marina is also very good. Fuel there tends to be more expensive.

Fuel at the Atlantic Highlands, you should have plenty of fuel for the trip up and back. In NYC area stay at Liberty Landing, best docks, flat calm, ferry to NYC if you want. Liberty House is good to eat at too.
