Does anyone ever do a pre-offer surveyor consultation, so you can make a sensible offer "subject to survey & sea trial"?
I am looking at a few boats, in new england & NY, NJ and may want to put an offer in on one. The thing is, I won't know which surveyor to use until I know which boat I am making an offer on, and I won't be sure of needing a survey until I make the offer and it is accepted.
So I guess the question I am asking is, is it possible to get a quick consultation (maybe have them go over the ad/boat specs and a 15 minute phone conversation), have the surveyor give me some advice as to where to make the initial offer, with the understanding that should the offer be accepted, it will be that surveyor who gets hired to do the survey? I am fine with paying for the surveyor's initial time, I am not looking for a freebie, I just haven't seen much mention of this being done.
Is it ever done and how does it usually work?
