hi all ,
what kind of price do surveyors charge to do a servey.i have never had one done before and was told $18.00 foot for a 29' donzi lxc with 92 hrs.
He said that includes sea trial.

thanks

2 1/2 years ago I paid $14/foot for a pre-purchase survey on a 34' convertible in NC. It included a dry and wet survey as well as a sea trial. Get more info here:

The surveyor will NOT operate the boat during the sea trail.

jaw, you don't say where you are located. I would expect $15/foot to be high in some places and $18 to be low in other places.

jaw111, Take a look at my web site below. Fees and description of services are there to give you a good guide. Oil sampling and diagnostic testing are extra.

honestly the difference of $4 /ft should not be the issue. The issue is the survey going to be done well and the buyer protected. I surveyed three boats before the right boat came along. The money I spent on the failed surveys was well worth it . Spent 600 to save a 45k nightmare. Good Luck.

$18 a foot may or may not be good as others have said. More important than what the surveyor charges is what the surveyor knows!!! Interview a few surveyors, ask them about their experience with the make and model boat you are considering and ASK FOR A RESUME!!! Any decent surveyor will not object to these requests and a really good one will appreciate the opportunity to share his/her qualifications.

In December I paid $14/foot for a complete survey including sea trial, plus another $300 to a mechanic recommended by the surveyor for compression and mechanical check of two engines and transmissions and a generator, plus $180 for a quick haul and wash. All totaled, it was money very well spent - I knew exactly what I was buying and have had very few surprises.

i'm located in md and the surveyor out of baltimore.the surveyor supposed to have 35 years doing surveys.on his card ,he is a member of ABYC,NMMA,ABYC and NFPA,boat us tech exchange and the society of naval architects and marine engineers.Talked to a mercruiser tech today who is going to check engine and outdrive and is willing to go on sea trial also, thanks
