On one of our trips I found a number of pump outs in disrepair. I complained and got the following response. If you're aware of a faulty pump out, here's the fix it guy:
Thanks for passing on email, but I would have to disagree that half of the pumpout stations installed under the CVA program no longer exist or that maintenance funds were not available.
While there may be a few pumpout stations that have been neglected after the pumpout grant contract expired the vast majority are still in operation. We currently have a group of volunteers that go to the pumpout installations each quarter and check on their condition. Any problems are reported to the operators immediately for repair. Overall the pumpouts are found to be operational with only a few trouble spots.
You may not be aware of it, but the CA Regional Water Quality Control Boards have not required pumpouts in every marina. So installations are pretty much voluntary on the part of the marina operators. And of course pumpouts are not a revenue source and therefore the last thing they want to get involved in.
Maintenance funds have always been available for the pumpouts but typically the marinas do not want to do the paperwork involved to get reimbursed for the small dollar amounts. We have implemented a maintenance program thru the Marina Recreation Association to try and minimize the paperwork , but not all members have signed on.
If you are aware of any pumpout locations that are not working I would be glad to look into it and see if they are under contract with us or would like to get involved with our program.
If you have any questions or would like to work with us to increase the availability of pumpout stations please give me a call. Thanks
