Purasan Tablets vs Swimming Pool Chlorine Tablets

I am reading contradicting comments regarding using swimming pool chlorine tablets rather than Purasan chlorine tablets for our Purasan system.
I know what Purasan folks say but they are selling those expensive tablets. What is the real scoop? BTW: I hate one of our Purasan units, nothing but trouble for the last four years; the other one is fine.
 
I have no experience at all with the Purasan, but the following thoughts on the subject did occur to me:

If using non-Purasan products, and if you are "inspected", your MSD may not meet the rules for such devices and result in a violation.

If the products are different, it is possible that you will either directly discharge excess chlorine ( a toxin ) or the product may not sufficiently sanitize the output, which sort of defeats the purpose of the exercise.

As far as the actual product is concerned, I have no knowledge of what is actually in those "tablets", but is is possible that the Purasan version is not chemically identical to the swimming pool variety. In which case the results may be quite different between the two products ( equally, they may be identical. I have no access to the chemistry of all ingredients in either product )

Just a thought.

"Inspections" aren't going to go that far and I doubt any LEO has the training to even know how a Type I or II MSD works (not their fault).

I find the Purasan tablets pack one heck of a punch fume-wise compared to chlorine. I think they're much more concentrated. I'll reach out to some people I know and try to confirm that for you.

Sorry one of your systems is giving you so much trouble. Is it the newer or older design? I have an older Pursan on my power cat and it can be a PITA at times. For my re-fit "trawler" project I sold the new older design Purasan and bought the latest model with the injection pump.
 
And the answer is that Raritan Purasan tablets are designed to kill waste in a Type I MSD, not algae in a swimming pool. The units would not get certified for use if "pool tablets" were used.
 
Both the Purasan tablets and the pool tablets should have MSDS sheets available on the Internet. The MSDS sheets will give you the chemical makeup of the tablets. Will they tell you if they are equivalent? - no. Will they tell you if they are close? - yes.

There are calcium hypochlorite pool tablets. You can get a 50lb bucket of them for $180. That still does not mean they are the equivalent of the Purasan tablets.
 
Thank you all for the comments. I have not had a chance to check anything in the last two week (stinking work always gets in the way).

I am going to post yet another Purasan problem under a new title. This system is a constant PITA for us. Ready to throw the entire system in the lake. I think the new EX system might be better but I m not willing to spend $3K to find out.
 
Our "new" boat came with a brand new "old" Purasan system. I sold it for $500 and bought the EX unit instead. The original has way too many issues with the chemical feed system (as you well know). I'll comment on your other topic.
