I assume the houses discussed above are all waterfront on the canal?

Most of the homes in my neighborhood are on a canal. Some of them are on "wide water" or directly on the river. Most of the homes on "wide water" have long docks to get into water greater than 4 feet.

I'm amazed at how many homes in the area have docks in the back yard.

When looking for waterfront/canal property in Florida, look for "deep water access". This means that there are no fixed bridges between the canal and the ocean.

We may not be at the bottom of the real estate market yet, but some of the house are beginning to move.

dont' kid yourself, the OWW is closed (one lock is now shutdown) and it's going to remain closed for a LONG time. they're spending millions in upgrading irrigation pumps so that they can run at lower levels...

Yes, the OWW is closed now. For how long? nobody knows. 5 years ago there was a drought. Followed by 3 - 4 wet years. Now we have a drought again. Actually, the drought is not here but north of Lake O.

OK, Captiva Island is not close because the OWW is closed. I hope it stays closed forever, because the water from Lake O is very brown.

The sunsets cant be beat either!

That's beautiful!

goplay, I would check out Port Charlotte also.

We went thru the OWW to Captiva Island between Christmas, 2006 and New Years, 2007. Port Charlotte is inland from Captiva Island. Ft. Meyers is on the OWW and it has the same brown water that the Stuart area has.

i have a new (new construction) waterfront house for sale http://www.innovative-designs.biz/forsale.html it is located on deep water with no fixed bridges in fort lauderdale. i've lived on the east coast ever since i moved to florida a little over 20 years ago and have visited the west coast both by land and sea many times. although i think i prefer the west coast in the winter, i have found it incredibly hot in the summer and much prefer the ocean breezes on the east coast during the summer. both have their features, its just a matter of preference and when you plan to be there.
