I need to replace seals on the water pump on my 1988 Mercruiser 165. To accomplish this I need to first remove the stator. Using a wheel puller I started pulling the stator but it looks like the cast iron case is coming off but not the guts with the windings. Is this correct that the outside case and the inside with the windings come of separately?
TIA

The stator is bolted to the engine. The magnets are inside the pully and rotate around the stator. What happened to me years ago was the magnets came loose and wrecked the stator. Those parts are very expensive. I put on a kit from Wagner Electric to install a regular marine alternator. Much better. My boat is also a 1988 mercruiser 165.

you need to stop what your doing and get the manual before its fubar . no puller is needed except for the harmoninc balancer that you removed with the puller already.
Not cast iron, aluminum and it comes off after the circ impeller is removed from the camshaft.

Pocket Change, thanks, your description of the function (magnets turning, windings stationary) makes sense.

Alien, I have the manual but there is no reference to the stator in it. I couldn't tell the that stator housing was aluminum, just that its a cast piece. (I don't have it completely off yet because I did stop pulling it until I made certain I wasn't screwing it up. The harmonic balancer is keyed on the crankshaft. It looks to me like it is coming off but leaving the windings (the guts of the stator) on the shaft. I guess I can finish pulling the harmonic balancer off the shaft and then figure out if the part with the windings needs to be removed to get the water pump off.

Now you really have us lost. You use a puller to remove the harmoninc balancer first
Then you remove the allen head screws and remove the stator coils,

to properly remove the front cover you should drop the oil pan a bit. Otherwise you have to cut the gasket where it meets the cover bottom. the circ impeller is either bolted to the camshaft or screwed on to the cam shaft. If you don't have the merc manual I can burn one.

alien, now that makes sense. Thanks for the photos and instructions. I have the rotor about half off then stopped to ask questions before I screwed it up. Don't have the tool they describe so I plan on using a long bolt to finish the pull. This is a real pain to fix a leaky water pump! As I said, the manual I have doesn't address the rotor but its an aftermarket manual, not actual Merc manual. If you could copy the one you referenced I would be happy to reimburse the copy and mailing costs!

alien, no, I do not. Used to go to BoatUS but that turned into a kindergarten playground.

alien, actually, I do have an account there as I've made several purchases from them. Mikeeh there as well. I'll post to you there just to confirm.

Done. Its in the Mercruiser forum.
