when is the best time to head north up the hudson to gain some speed from the current / tide
ill be leaving from staten island

thanks

Get a tide and current chart for the date you are going and leave when the tide starts coming in.

We are familiar with 10-11k. At our speed when traveling to Liberty Landing it usually means about 1/2 hour less if we leave Kingston at the correct time. If you give me a starting and ending point I can run it against my software.
Over long distances at the slower speeds we use, sometimes it's a wash.

You can do a Google search for "tidesonline" -- then select the various stations you want to check.

Going around the island on the west side thru the kill and past the statue to the tapanzee, if you leave at 8.00 AM it will take about 4.5 hours to get to the TZ bridge. If you leave at 1:20 PM it will take 6.5 hours to get to the bridge. So that section of the trip is certainly short enough to be impacted by tide at 8 knots. It looks like you luck out going north on that date.
How much further were you going?

PS This assumes you are on the water and moving along at 8 at the start time.
