maybe this belongs in a different forum but you guys are the best. spent three hours fishing off the hook on saturday. caught two flounders one small the other about 16 in how do you tell the difference between summer or winter flounder i threw it back since i did not want a fine. then the rest of the day nothing but sea robbins about twenty to be exact. i was using clams and squid. is there different bait i should use if i want to catch something different like blue fish or strippers. i want to go back but after the 5th sea robbin it got really tired.

Way back when I used sand eels in the east rockaway inlets. Caught a doormat with 'em.

Fifty bucks is probably good bait for a stripper. :)

http://www.ocean.udel.edu/mas/seafood/flounder.html Here is a link that may help you with Id for Fluke(Summer Flounder). Fluke also will get alot bigger than winter flounder....I use Smelt, Squid or killies for bait for Fluke. Do alot of drifts along the channels just as the channel drops off. Fluke hang on the ends to ambush the bait fish. A good area to drift is by the TC bouy. We have gotten several door mas there...

I don't think you'll catch winter flounder this time of year, the water is too warm. Fluke 'summer flounder' have much bigger mouths with small teeth you can see. Flounders have much smaller mouths.

Squid or spearing are good baits for fluke. Early in the season there were bluefish everywhere, not sure now. You'll have better luck with stripers once the water starts cooling down again.
