Saturday Morning Pics Edition #1 - RRR +Big Chute

That's right Bob, bet you did not know that a Boat could fly[:-angel]

Only in a Regal![^][^]

As usual great pics. We were on our way to Frying Pan Bay on Beausoleil Island and enroute we met Vaughn and Daniela and spent the night at Driftwood Cove. Vaughn guided us out into Georgian Bay as it was our first out there. And yes I did hear about the stories of the turtles, but we didnt hit any. We also bumped into Greg and Gail a night later at Driftwood Cove on our return. Thanks for the videos for the kids.

Mike, your 47' would be no problem. I believe they can handle up to 100 footers with 25 foot beam. I forget the exact name but the 'Queen of the Kawarthas" tourist boat goes thru.

As far as the slings, they are also not a problem after you free float for a couple of seconds. They have heavy steel cables going thru them plus pull down cables that drops them to below the floor level in slots.

Here is the best shot I could find and you can see how the slings would drop below floor level.

With a big inboard, they leave the props hanging off the back (over air).

Harry, nice pics but did you mean "Scott" and Gail? in Misty. They sometimes travel with the Black Pearl.

Also Harry, when posting pics, make sure you enter the 'return' key and then post your pic so it lines up on the left hand side of your messsage box. You then also enter 'return' at the end of your pic and start a new sentence on a new line. (versus cutting a pic into your post at the end or inbetween a sentence which pushes the thread out so you need to use the scoll bar). Also best to post pics that are no more than 800X600 resolution.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the great post and awesome pics.. we were at the boat for a windy weekend before haulout on Monday. (10/22) So we're all done for the season now too.

Look forward to more of your great posts.

Vaughn, the Pearl looks great as usual.. :)

Fantastic trip and photos! This must be what, "Oh! Canada,!"s all about!

Hi Greg

Yes, I did mean Scott and Gail in Misty. And yes I did notice that the pics were a bit off centered and a bit big. I wasnt sure how to resize them without cropping them, thanks for the tip. Hopefully next year we can you join you on the next RRR.

Hey Greg,

How much does it cost to travel over the "Big Chute"?
I assume it's not a free thing?
Do you have to schedule arrival time in advance?

Joe, there are various 'options' available when traveling within the Trent Severn Waterway.

Most of our group simply buy a season's pass which runs about $275 for a 35 footer. (it goes by cost per foot).

You can also buy a 1 day pass, 6 day pass, and so on. (eg: if you are going to run from Trenton at Lock 1 to Port Severn at Lock 45 to get your boat to Georgian Bay and then leave it there, you would only get the 6 day pass. On the other hand, for us, we run between our marina and Georgian Bay (4 locks) quite often during the summer so we just buy the season's pass).

As far as scheduling, in general, it is first come first serve at most locks. You have to line up on the 'blue wall (dock)' if locking thru or the grey wall (dock) if you are not (staying over or for lunch type of thing).

Normally the docks on the starboard side have a painted 'blue' stripe and the docks on the port side as you arrive at a lock are painted grey which if you think about it, allows people to wait in line upon arrival, and when exiting on the other side, stop off on the grey wall once they have locked thru (eg: for lunch) which keeps the flow moving.

Dependent upon the lock, most people get in, in the order they arrived.

They can pack them in, in the regular locks.

However, at the Big Chute, it is a little different. You line up at the blue wall in the order you arrive but, the lock masters will call over a loud speaker to say they will take the 3rd boat first (on the front left), and then the 2nd boat (on the front right) and then maybe the 1st boat (center rear).

This is at the top of the Chute with the boats lined up on the blue wall.

It all depends on size and where the lock masters want your boat positioned. After the three boats (as in the above sample) are loading, the remaining boats on the blue wall, will move up in position allowing new arrivals room to dock.

Here is a shot of the blue wall at the bottom of the Chute with two boats on it.

You would be amazed from a distance how well the lock masters know their boats. ie: they will call out, "we will take the 3560 Regal first and then the 25 ft Doral Citation next and then the Larsen behind it.", type of thing

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the info.. it's pretty neat how that works.
I imagine it would be fun to lock through a few times just to check it out.
