Just thought I'd put a note on here since no one is posting. Sorry I'm away so much and unable to participate a whole lot. On the other hand, you all seem to do a good job of interacting on your own, so there isnt much for me to do. Anyway, I thought I'd say hi, and hope you all are looking forward to a great boating season in 2012!!!

Pete, how did the (re) opening of the Erie Canal go last Thanksgiving? Did very many boats take advantage?

Some did, the ones that were trapped by Irene and hadnt found another way around, either by land or sea. I was very impressed by how fast the Canal Corporation got everything going again - most people thought it would be mid-2012 before they reopened.

The dedicated people who run the canal locks really are a special breed, who know they are in charge of history and act like it. I only hope that we can rekindle commercial interest in the barge canal because it will ensure a much brighter future than if its strictly recreation. And I promise that we're trying :)

I know this board can be pretty quiet sometime, but I've gotten some incredibly useful advice and help on here when I needed it.

Good to hear about the Canal -- I'm looking at a Carver 3607 in Noank, CT right now, and toying with this completely absurd idea of taking a month off this summer and sailing it part of the way over toward South Dakota -- Long Island Sound, up the Hudson, Erie Canal, and then have it hauled and trucked from Toledo. Completely silly, impractical, expensive idea, but that would be so cool.

so with all those cons and cost when does the trip start ? ;)... after all isn't that what it's all about...

My carver came up the Champlain canal last summer from it's former home in Maine. This was just before Irene. The captain who brought it up had great things to say about the help he got in the locks. He was impressed by the whole experience. I'm hoping to make that trip one day.

The locks are a great trip, you just gotta have patience. Dont be in a hurry, enjoy the fact that you are passing through 180 years of history and a good portion of the Industrial Revolution. And that only a few miles away a NEW industrial revolution is being born - the birth of the tech industry in New York State.

Come visit me if you come through! I run the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County, a chamber of commerce which supports the business community along the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers just past the junction of the two waterways. The Waterford visitors center docks are only a few miles from my office, we have lots of local information available, and I'm told the Mayor of Mechanicville even comes down to the docks and barbecues on weekends sometimes... :)
