Anyone ever go by boat ? Thinking about dropping anchor in the bay, have dinner and watch.

http://www.limaritime.org/boat_burning.html The Long Island Maritime Museum announced that their 21st Annual Boat Burning will take place on Friday, October 28th at 5:30 pm. The rain date is October 29th. The Boat Burning, which is held on the grounds of the museum, marks the height of fall with an event for the entire family. Admission will be $5.00 with children under 5 free.

Each year, someone donates a large, wooden boat that is beyond repair to the museum. Loosely based on the Norse tradition of a Viking Funeral, the boat is set ablaze by the West Sayville Fire Department to the delight of the many families in attendance. In addition, the winning raffle ticket for a handmade 10’ Lapstrake wooden rowing skiff, constructed by volunteers at the Museum’s Penney Boat Shop with white cedar, steam bent oak frames and a mahogany transom, will be
announced during the evening. Tickets, $5.00 a piece or (5) for $20.00, are sold months in advance and can be purchased right up until the time of the drawing.

“This unique annual event has become a fall tradition in our community,” said Executive Director Steve Jones. “In addition to hosting Long Island’s largest bonfire, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the outstanding work that our boat shop volunteers do, by raffling off one of their beautiful creations.”

Halloween costumes are encouraged and live music, refreshments and snacks will be on hand.

The Long Island Maritime Museum, which operates under a license agreement with Suffolk County Parks, serves to preserve Long Island's maritime history and heritage for educational purposes.

If you go by boat, there is dockage right there by Kingstons.
Not sure I would go in there with too big of a boat as it is tight.
I haven't been there since I had my 24' boat.
They used to serve you dinner on your boat.

Sounds interesting, I may go by land.
Don't need ash falling on my boat!

A friend of mine was part of the team that built the raffle boat......she does beautiful work and I'm sure will be attending the event.

Just got an email....they are burning 2 30' boats....should be interesting.

Its funny that they are burning a wooden boat, and then raffling a wood boat off...

Shame, I bet if those old boats could talk they would have some pretty cool stories

It starts at 5:30 ? I guess only people with 9-5 jobs and work local can be there on time. I work in the city, but for me it would be ok since I get off by 2:00 on Fridays. But Linda even working local would not be able to make it by 5:30. But most likly we will swing by around 6 or so. Should be going strong by then.

Even better if they are closed, plenty of free dockage!
If I recall, been a few years, the basin in there is tight, but i would say room for about 6 boats along bulkhead. Again, i wouldn't go in there with anything over 30' but that's me.

They don't light up the boat until around 8 PM. Parking can take a little time especially if it is nice out. I have been there with a strong south wind and the smoke was tough to take until the boat started to burn. My friend's brother used to keep a 51 foot Bertram in there but I would't go if you are not familiar...especially at night. That is where all of the Party boats go to be serviced in the winter as well, even the ones from the north shore. It's like threading the needle with those boats.

Barbara - you know Betty? Yes, they built a beautiful Chesapeake Skerry this year... sail/row boat.

For anyone interested in going by boat... plenty of room to tie up in our canal/basin right at the LI Maritime Museum... Canal entrance is just west of Green Creek / Green Harbor. The entire bulkhead on the east side is available as well as one slip - the northernmost corner slip. The next 3 slips are rented, and the rest are too shallow. Bow in only for the slip as the west dock side is shallow. Tie up anywhere along the east side bulkhead. If you enter the basin, DO NOT go near the west side as it's very shallow. East side of the basin & the canal have 4' at high tide which is 9:30pm Friday evening. We run the 60' oyster sloop Priscilla 2 hours before & after high tide w/o problem; she draws 3'9" with board up.

We just ask that you walk North to the gate by the golf course to purchase tickets after docking.

The W. Sayville FD lights the boats after dark sometime after 7 -7:30pm.

Band "Tribute" will be playing and one vendor with hot food; no beer for sale :(

interj's post has wrong dates; this is the 22nd annual on Oct 26 with rain date Sat Oct. 27

Oh & Barbara is right - 2 boats, a 26' Scopinich flybridge & a 38' Egg Harbor aft cabin. We are filling the cockpit of the 26 with all the scrap wood we have.
