Replaced shoe-box sized tank with a nice 30 gallon unit in the engine room...all new hoses.

1) Purchase a charcoal filter for the vent but not sure where to mount it - close to the tank vent or as high as I can by the thruhull up by the gunnel?

2) Currently flush is salt water - thinking of converting to fresh since the bowl stinks due to algae etc in the lines. Vessel is a weekend cruiser - sleeps 4 - but rarely overnights more than 2. 80 gallons water on-board. Pros and cons?

Thanks

The vent is a band-aid....The larger the vent hose the better and if you can cross vent even better. Cross vent with two hoses into the tank and not t'd together......The smell you are having is most likely microorganism that have died around the ring of the bowl, while you were away and the toilet not being used...Usually clears up after 4 or 5 flushes....If you have the capacity I would changeover to fresh water flush...

I suggest the product (Happy Camper). It is guaranteed to work or your money back. This means no smell period. 1 oz. is all you need per treatment. I live aboard in summer months and get a pump out every three weeks. No more smell from toilet brush, toilet, hoses,or holding tank. Go to their website and look at the comparisons. It sure worked great for me.

With only two on board for weekends, you have more than enough capacity to switch head to fresh water. You have a nice new tank and hoses - why make the system stinky with salt water?

Peggie Hall always said charcoal filters were a waste of money. Venting is key as described by BarrenRiver.

We started using Happy Camper this year. No complaints so far.

Can you install a Purisan or lectrosan that can dump treated sewage where you boat? If so, thet's the route to go. If not, please take a look at the vent system on an early 2000's Regal 246x series. I had one and the vent hose was either 3/4 or 1" inner diameter. It was mounted very high and was a direct shot to the tank. That is...no bends. It vented very well. As nancy said, the only thing that would have been an improvement was a second vent hose to handle all anchoring angles. What I liked most about the setup was, because of the size of the vent, I could run a piece of (dedicated for the purpose) garden hose into the tank and flush it completely clean while pumping out. I was amazed as to how dirty the tank was when I thought it was clean.

HTH.

Thanks Folks [ will consider a second vent line.....and I'm thinking fresh water flush is the way to go. Might leave the salt water connections all set up too in case I hit the bahamas and have to pay $4/gallon for water there .... ;-)
