Should I Bottom sand always?

I am going to apply Interlux Micron Extra. The can says sand and wipe witrh 216 thinner. All the Micron from the previuous year washes off when I haul out, leaving a hard surfaced old bottom paint originally on the boat which I usually paint over every year with good result. I'd like to get away from the sand and just give it a wipe with the 216. What's the educated opinion on doing this?
 
90% of a well executed, durable painted surface is.....Proper prep. I'd sand it, it gives the new paint something to adhere to.
 
If you are doing this every year and do not see any harm, why bother changing. Power wash and wipe it down, repaint and be done. If you have intact hard paint, no blisters and no impact performance growth, I do not see a problem with continuing your current practice.
 
Actually I have been sanding, but this year I was thinking of trying it without, since the base seems clean.
 
The tooth is what it adheres to. No sand, no tooth. Maybe there is enough tooth left over, but I bet those pores do not fully clean themselves out.

But hey, you do this every year. What's the worst thing that can happen? :)
 
If the old hard paint is well adherent and clean, I would not sand.
 
Try a scotchbrite pad instead of sandpaper, then wipe with 216. using this method I have gotten two years with the micron.
