Vacation 2011: SPBM stright to Block Island the outside run. Looks likes like 160 miles out on the south south shore.
Anyone make this run?

We always go through LI Sound, and make a couple of stops along the way.

+1 that could get pretty nasty on a bad day and that could be hell on all plans the follow.

Having boated on the North Shore and South Shore, I agree with all of the above. While the Sound can be nasty if wind is from the east, the ocean run would be far worse. Also, the South shore ICW has 5 mph zones and skinny water in Tiana and Moriches bays. All doable but you're not going to do it fast if you have to duck inside. The added thrill would be that if the ocean is rough, the inlets will be challenging.

IMO, the Sound is a better way and provides a number of options if you want to make a stop to break up the trip.

From NY harbor the run via the sound is a good 15 miles shorter than running on the outside of the southshore, and as other said many more options
