SS3 MARINA

I think you get more for your money at the Anchorage and more freedom of choice from a service standpoint. But, we have a great group of boats, hang on the dock and laugh all weekend, have big barbecues all the time and we go away to marinas and raft up all summer. Every Friday night thru Sunday night my family and I go on vacation - Life does not get better than this! The great friends, camaraderie and great times are worth the extra money to be at SS3 for us!
 
If you compared cost to cost, AYC definately blows away SS3.
I rent a 40' slip for $4100, that is $102.50 a foot and it includes winter storage.
Now add it savings from vendors.
I pay some guy to paint my bottom for $2.50 a foot.
Shrink wrap guy is $10 a foot.
I can bring in my own mechanic.
 
Dave, who do you get to bottom paint for 2.50 a ft? Im assuming you supply paint??
 
Yes, I supply paint. Just a kid we have used for the last few years.
Cost me more in clothes, drop cloths, and painting suuplies if I did it myself but he brings all that!

Dave, no argument here. It is probably $2,000 per year cheaper to stay at the anchorage. Had there been a big enough slip for my 410da when I got it, I would probably be on D dock now. But, like boating, you can not justify the expense on a spreadsheet. We love our dock and we have been with the same 8 plus boats for the last 5 years and this group has been unchanged for the last 10 years. Very unusual to have the same boaters in the same slips for a decade and going strong. We give each other space when needed but mostly we are a very tight knit family of die hard boaters! I was at the anchorage for 10 years, mostly on D dock which in my opinion is the only dock I would want to be on. I always got friendly with my neighbors at the anchorage but most boaters kept to themselves. My wife hated boating until we fell into this group at SS3 and now she is looking forward to spring as much as me! Can't put a price on this! Happy boater's wife = Happy boater life!

With respect to winter and mechanics, I bring my boat elsewhere.
 
Your also just comparing renting slip for slip.
When you own, savings are even greater.

Dave, who shrink wraps at the anchorage for $10 ft?

That was 2011, I didn't wrap this year.
 
Bottom line, being in the AYC has lots of cost advantages, not to mention and my gig when I bought a slip "MY BOAT HAS A HOME"

Really, I have a slip that has appreciated 40 percent in 9 years, my cost to dock a 51LOA boat is around 1700 a year plus electric. I have million dollar views of the great south bay, picnic table, BBQ behind the boat, drive right up to the boat, Really, where on LI do you have that!!!!

Me, 9 years on the south shore of LI, kind of tired of this playground :(
 
If I had to choose between the Anchorage and SS3 it would be simple. Anchorage would be an easy choice. Less money, pool if you want it, ability to work on your boat, and have choice of vendors.
 
There is one thing holding me back from the AYC. I just want to get to the boat, check the systems and go. I dont like to hang at the dock, Im not a fan of having a party on the dock. I could see where it would be fun, but its not my cup of tea..

I know I dont have to participate in it, but I dont want to be the debbie downer kinda guy lol
 
So do hi and dri. Call up. Put boat in water. Show up. Park. Load boat. Go. No dock mates. Come back. Pull into work slip. Leave. They wash and rack.

Oh and we don't want to hang with you either.

Being social is part of life!
Yes some people I find dull and stupid but some I find interesting and intriguing.

I have some dock neighbors who just get in and go. Hanging and chatting is always optional.
