I am new in Stockton and I want to go out fishing for Sturgeon and Stripers, anyone knows the best fishing spots, I have a 24 foot boat the model is Four Winns 240 Horizon, it is a ski boat but I can fish with it once in a while. I will Highly appreciate your inputs.

thank you

George -- I suggest you check the Fishfinder in the Record; You can find it on the Web at Recordnet.com scroll to Sports Home then down a tad to Outdoors. This is a good site. Nothing about sturgeon in the latest one, which means it is dead for now. Hang in there and I'm sure you'll get a lot more good advice about secret spots. You've got a sweey rig in that For Winns. -- Warren

thanks Warren, I visited the site and it was very informative, i also think that I need a GPS to go around Delta.

George -- Don't rush out just yet to buy a GPS. Do you have a Delta map, such as theHal Schell map, plus a NOAA Sacremento-San Joaquin River CHART? You can get both at West Marine at Monte Diablo & Fremont. You can familiarize yourself with the Delta by studying the map which is basically a SKETCH. The chart is an ACCURATE depiction of the same areas. Learn a little more about your needs before investing in electronics. I also am sure there will be more advice on this topic here on this forum. -- Warren

Welcome to the delta and this forum! There are a couple of good sites for you. Here you can access info and weekly posted fish reports: http://www.californiadelta.org/fishing.htm

And here is a another good website: http://www.fishdelta.com/

Yes, a GPS is a good idea. Especially if you expect to go out at night or when it is foggy. A good delta map [Hal Schell's is sold on the CA Delta.org website and at many bait shops] and NOAA charts of the delta/SF Bay areas should be on board. Keep a VHF radio on board and consider buying towing insurance "just in case". VAAA covers the entire delta and bay.

Good luck!

thanks Warren and Liz,
I am gathering all the stuff I need to launch my boat the very first time in Delta, I might not fish at first, I plan to cruise around and survey Delta, I want to feel how my boat will handle the delta current. I heard that Delta is being affected by the Bay tides and some winds that makes the water choppy, I just hope that my boat will handle it, as I said I have a 24 foot boat and it has 320 Horse Power on it.

xyzabc------what is your point? I think all you did was copy/repeat what is in this topic already? What am I missing????

Buddy. Your boat is just about perfect for the delta! The winds shouldn't effect your boat too much and you have plenty of power for the currents. Just remember the currents and depths change as the tide changes. And the tide changes do not happen everywhere in the delta at the same time. So plan accordingly. However from the water, many areas can look the same. So I would advise you have a GPS which automatically shows you were you are going. Then to get back, you take the reciprocal. It's the old cookie crumb theory and works quite well! Most common problem for a newbie is running out of gas. Know how much fuel your boat burns in an hour and time your visits to gas docks accordingly.

Have fun and let us know what you find! BTW when the temp goes up, the winds are down and the water is far from choppy!

George -- Yes, these are tidal waters, and you can get a tide book where you buy the ma[ and chart; ask how to use it. Yes, a 24-footer (I have one) with 310 hp can be used safely in the upper Del ta -- if it is operated safely. The Power Squadron and Coast Guard Auxiliary offer boating courses and you can obtain info by Googling or asking at West Marine, Larson's Marine on Fremont and other major boat dealers, possibly including your own. Also those tqo dealers, and most likely others, have literature racks with excellent free pamphlets on various phases of boating safety. Where will you launch your boat? The city ramp at Buckley Cove at the end of March Lane, is considered among the safest from vandalism of your truck-trailer while you are boating. Ladd.s on the right just before the Guard Shack has a literature rack and a compact store. The July 4 holiday week is not the best choice for a maiden voyage because all of the idiots are sure to be on the water. George, you said you are a newcomer to Stockton. Where do you hail from? -- Warren

Also check out the California Delta website under fishing reports. These are usually published on Wednesday. It covers all local Delta fishing and even Antioch and Suisun Bay. Sturgeon fishing is pretty slow at this time until probably October on. They are still catching some around Suisun Bay and up to the bay. They are still catching stripers all around and catfish in almost any cove.

Sorry didn't mean to duplicate other posts. Just got home from the boat and I guess I am still a little swimmy headed. Just read the first question and jumped in. Another good place is www.fishsniffer.com. go to message boards under freshwater fish. Will list each individual specie and where fishing has been good. Good luck. As far as GPS on our boat wouldn't leave home without. Gives so much more information needed besides lat and longitude.

A boat like that should be able to handle the delta with ease. Mine's a 16 foot with a 90 horse outboard, a MUCH smaller boat, and we do fine out there unless the wind really picks up good. GPS is nice, but not totally necessary. You could spring for a gps chartplotter for like $600+ or if you know how to use a paper chart and you're only going out for afternoon cruises, a <$100 handheld gps that only gives your coordinates would honestly be sufficient with a chart of your local area.
