Swimming in the Hudson

Does this work?
79th Street Boat Basin to North Croton anchorage to Rondout (2/3 days) to The Hook off New Baltimore to Watertown past Federal Lock?

yep, that works. If you time the currents you can even pick up a couple of knots for free

And if you time North Croton to arrive on a weekend you may never leave!

How fast do you typically cruise?

captcraig, just something to consider...last summer I wanted to stop at the 79th St. boat basin for a few hours around lunchtime. The tide was running out at the time and the dock master advised (told) me not to come into the marina because of low water. Perhaps you've been there before without any problems, but perhaps Liberty Landing Marina might be a better (calmer) overnight stay before heading north.

79th Street does have low water issues but I think many transients are put on a mooring ball so be careful. My buddy has hit the mud in his 21'er.

I know boaters who have gone into 79th Street to pick up or drop off boaters, and have had a miserable time trying to vessel stable agianst the docks due the backwash. IMO there are much better marinas in this general area on the NJ side of the river.

I have taken a 4ft draft into the boat basin in the past, but this time I am taking my 28ft Hatteras Cruiser with a 30" draft.
The reason I picked the boat basin is that I live in the city and will most likely be entertaining at the basin or getting last minute details taken care of before moving up the HUDSON.

I plan to run speeds of 13-16kts and use the tides. My crusing speed is 16kts, but when I can, I plan to do 10kts to conserve fuel and enjoy the scenes. I have diesels so consuption is better than gas

I am planning on doing the Down East loop which will take me throught Champlain to St Lawerance to the east coast and back to Long Island South Shore.
Thanks

With all due respect Dan (and I do mean that - I read and enjoy all of your posts), I feel this is an unfair characterization of what Catskill is now like. I have many friends who are permanents at the Catskill Marina who would also disagree.

Sierra

We used to love stopping in at either facility and walking up to Conca D'Oro for a good fet. Their specials were always good. But on a couple of the last occasions we had to walk past crowds of kids near the movie theater and police station. We have also walked through the low income areas butting up to the Catskill marina to go to the chocolate store and been met with stares of jealousy that make your skin crawl.
Listening to the rap music boiling out of the area at night in the summer was not high on our list of amenities.

By the way, you might be able to tie up at the restaurant (Guido's?) at the end of the Catskill creek if you don't need water and power as long as you dine there.

But thanks for chiming in about Shady and the other places North. If I am not mistaken Coeyman's has some of the cheapest fuel prices but who knows given what's going on in the economy.
If anyone does go to Coeymans, study the charts well. Many try to drive their boats over the wall in front of the marina and yacht club. One has to pretty much hug the shoreline or be off center of the channel favoring the shore side. And don't try to leave going north at low tide.
As far as anchorages go, I'll second the one across from Coeymans. It's reasonably protected and calm generally speaking. Travel North up the dead end to the east of Houghtaling Island at red 180 and pick a spot to throw the hook. The further up you go, the calmer it usually is.

Dan, I do hope you're enjoying that frolicking around in warmer climes while the rest of us rot up here [:-mischievous]...

My son almost got into a fight with a kid at the park in Catskill, because the kid was picking on someone else and my son (then about 4 or 5), being raised in a boring middle class household, didnt know the etiquette of dealing with children from rough neighborhoods. The other kid was about twice his age and size. I watched from a distance so Jr could learn something then stepped in when it looked like it might get serious...

I agree with Dan in that Catskill makes me nervous compared to the other two creeks. But I'm still willing to go there because quite honestly the creek is beautiful, and I love that waterfront park at the end of the peninsula. They have a farmers market and a little food/ice cream stand into the Fall which makes it more user-friendly than Saugerties... The Rondout is the best, of course, with all the amenities and the longest creek for gunkholing, fishing and swimming, plus the anchoring in the area near Eddyville is the best around. Its all a matter of preference, and I frequent all 3 creeks (so long as I can afford the damn gas to go anywhere!)...

I'm dying to try that area near Houghtaling. I've always looked at that inviting and isolated stretch of water on the charts and thought it was neat. Plus, Junior can watch the trains go by, up close and personal...

Coeymans Landing is great too - an excellent place to stop, but no place to swim as far as I know. There is a nice little park where we BBQed last time we were there and Junior loved the swing sets, but thats a few years ago now...

I just read some articles regarding the dredging and that the bucket procedure has been a complete failure releasing 10x more pcbs into the water than expected. From what I read there were 10 - 20 barges a day. Where were they dredging?

I heard this too and it is disturbing. BTW the last time I was in Watertown the town dock was free on a first come basis. They have electric and water even clean bathrooms and showers. It has been a few years for me but I have fond memories. I had a nice dinner in town at a local pub. The dock is a short walk the to fist lock in the Erie canal. In fact one of my favorite pictures was taken there I will try to find and add it later.

The dredging is near Fort Edward, where the River and the Champlain Canal separate...

Hell, I swam in the River in the 1970s when they were sure it was gonna kill us, I swim in it now. And I drive a big SUV and could give a crap about human-induced Global Warming because I think the so-called experts are either full of "caca" or politically motivated. I'm tired of getting used as a pawn in this game...
