The Tall Ships will be in Newport between June 27 and July 3 of this year ( the website states departure on July 1st - but some ships will remain until the 3rd ). They've been here three times in the past, but this coming visit will include the greatest number of ships.
The first time we fully experienced the visiting tall ships was during the bicentennial in 1976. I have movies (remember super-8?) and hundreds of photos from that event. Since we have always cruised to Martha's Vineyard for the 4th every summer, we've missed the subsequent visits.
This year we're staying on Narragansett Bay and will look forward to sailing around the ships during their visit. The best place to view them will be from the water - especially during their full-sail parade. Weather permitting, the route is usually planned to sail under the Newport bridge to the upper East Passage.
Since the predictions are for over 200,000 visiters during the visit, any land-based areas best for viewing will be mobbed - especially at Fort Adams in Newport & Fort Weatherill, Jamestown. Some ships will be docked along the waterfront and available for boarding. You'll have to check the schedule if that's of interest. We boarded a few, after waiting in very long lines - but it's worth the experience just to see them up close.
