It's done all the time; most Type II systems use that method, as well as Groco's "Sweet Tank" system. The "catch" is that the perforated pipe must be laid on the bottom of the tank, so that the air comes up from there, aerating the entire contents of the tank. You can't just run a pipe down from the top. Look on Groco's website for more info.
